His poker face remained in place. “Go fish.”

“What do you think it means when a guy tells you he loves you?”

“That depends.”

“On what?”

“He want in your pants?”

“No, for the purposes of our conversation, he’s already in… Okay, you know what? Never mind.” Lucy held up a hand.

Neilson grinned. “William?”

Yes, of course it was Will. “Maybe.”

“Inappropriate for me to comment then.”

“Okay, it’s not him. It’s a…I don’t know…a guy named Ernie.”

Neilson folded his cards in his hand and leaned back in his chair, tapping the edge of the cards on the table. “Hypothetically, a guy doesn’t toss around the L-word without meaning it. Unless he wants in your pants. He’s already in? Nothing to gain.”

Lucy dropped her fist to the table in mock drama. “You can communicate with words.”

“On occasion.” Neilson waved a hand over the table. “Any kings?”

“Go fish,” she mumbled.

“Still irritated at him?” he asked.

“It’s subsiding. I’m tired, though. Think I’ll call it a night.” She yawned and tossed the rest of her cards down. “Thanks for keeping me company.”

She rose to clear their dishes to the sink while he put the cards back in the box.

“Lucy.”

She raised her head to look at him.

He smiled at her, a real, honest to goodness with teeth and everything smile. “Ernie’s lucky.”

He must’ve meant it. Neilson didn’t use many words, but when he did, they counted.

“That might be the nicest thing anyone’s ever said to me.”

Her phone rang from the counter next to Will’s mother’s letter. “

That’s probably Ernie,” she said, glancing to the display. Yep.

“Answer it?” Neilson nodded to the phone as it rang again.

She took a fractured breath and wandered from the room. Some things hadn’t changed. She would still be leaving soon, but tatters were all that remained of her anger. He was right. They needed to talk when he got back without her temper making an appearance.

Lucy clicked it on and put it to her ear. “Will.”

“I know you probably don’t want to talk to me, but I had to see if you were okay.”

“I’m okay,” she replied.

He paused. “I didn’t expect you to answer.”
