“I am a coward.” He said, his voice cracking. “I gave up. I should have never doubted you.” He pulled back, gripping the sides of my face before pressing his lips into mine. He kissed me so deeply fireworks exploded across my vision. I melted into him, feeling every broken piece of me suddenly stitch back together under the velvet press of his lips.

Breaking the kiss, he rested his forehead against mine, staring so deep into my eyes I was sure he could see my soul.

“I’m sorry I underestimated you. It will never happen again.” He breathed.

“Better not.” I tried to tease him, but it was impossible with the way he was looking at me.

“My Queen!” Nytara screamed, and I turned just in time to catch a burning quasar directly in the chest.

I was blown away from Amon and he roared in rage. My vision shuttered in and out as I flew through the air, hitting the sandy ground on the other side of the arena.

I pushed through the pain and forced myself to stand, turning to face Ash Nevra. She was seething with rage, both her hands filled with burning red energy.

Adrenaline pulsed through me, and I could barely feel the burn in my chest, but I knew I was seriously injured. I wasn’t wearing any armor and she had landed a direct hit.

Amon threw himself at Ash Nevra, but he was weakened from the release of the bond. His shadows were slow to respond and suddenly he was swarmed by armed guards. His face went white with rage and he incinerated four of them with a blast of dark energy, before immediately whipping around and killing three more. Nytara threw herself at the Queen next, but Kieran intercepted with a mob of magick folk.

Ash Nevra stalked toward me through the sand. She kicked off her stilettos and her hips swayed beneath the liquid silk of her slip dress as she moved.

I could smell burnt flesh. I glanced down to find my shirt nearly melted into my skin. Fuck. It was a gnarly wound. I felt my stomach churn at the sight of it.

I realized with a start, that I had never been injured like this before. Seeing my flesh so mangled was horrifying. I felt the beginnings of shock creep in and shook my head, trying to stay focused on Ash Nevra as she continued to advance, powering up more energy as she approached.

“You have ruined my plans for the last time!” She screeched, firing another burning red quasar at me. “No more games. I’m done playing! This ends NOW!”

With more effort than it should have taken, I launched myself into the air, avoiding the burning crimson beam of energy by a hair. I powered up my own midnight quasars as I hung before her.

“You think we’re playing a game?” I asked, my voice dark. “You’re not even in the same fucking league.”

I fired a massive blast of darkness directly at her. She vanished, and my beam melted the sand where she had just been standing into a black streak of glass. She appeared behind me, and I turned. I was slower than I should have been due to my injury. I barely made it out of the way of her next attack, and caught the tail end of her next blast in the shoulder.

I screamed in pain as my right arm lost mobility and she started to laugh.

“Bold words from a bleeding half-dead infant!” She threw more and more power at me, driving me closer to the ground. With only one working arm, it was all I could do to defend and deflect.

“RAVEN!” I heard Amon roar. Despite the fact that I could tell he was operating at barely half his regular amount of power, he tore through soldier after soldier,

Finally, I hit the ground, and there was nowhere left for me to go. She slammed down on top of me, straddling my hips, laughing.

“You know what? This is better. Why should my Shadow have all the fun? I would rather kill you myself!”

“RAVEN!” Amon screamed again and darkness exploded through the colosseum. I watched as nearly a hundred daemons fell dead beneath the vicious press of his shadows.

“He’s not going to make it in time.” Ash Nevra purred, watching him slaughter mobs of daemons as she rocked against my hips.

She leaned over me, her breasts scraping against the gaping wound in my chest. I hissed in pain.

“I’m going to kill you, and then fuck him next to your corpse.” She purred into my ear. “Just like this.” She ground her hips into me again to demonstrate. “My Shadow loves it when I ride him. You should hear the sounds he makes when he pops inside me.”

Her words washed over me and the very thin leash of control I had over my daemon snapped. The sound of a drum beat began deep inside of me and the very ground beneath me began to tremble.

She rocked on top of me again, laughing. I watched through blackened vision as she drew back a hand filled with crimson power.

I snarled.

I didn’t need my arm to work.

I was going to kill this bitch.
