I looked at my mate, and tried to see him through Jeremy’s eyes. The way the shadows clung to him in his all black attire made him look sinister and demonic. His cold, emotionless expression didn’t help make him anymore approachable. To make matters worse, the way his eyes followed me like he was a predator and I was something to eat, was definitely not winning him any brownie points.

Most dads worry that their daughter might bring home some degenerate dude with a motorcycle for dinner. Jeremy’s daughter had mated with the Prince of Darkness himself.

That was the difference, though. Mate. Amon was not a boyfriend. He was the other half of my soul. We had accepted our mating bond and that meant forever.

I would not abandon him, no matter what he did, and if I was honest, I didn’t think he was doing anything that bad. His behaviour right now was a trauma response. It would take time, but we would work on this together.

“I know, Dad. He’s just been through a lot. He wasn’t always like this… We just need time to heal.”

“Raven you’re only eighteen… he locked you in that room with him for two days! He hasn’t been able to keep his damn hands off you the whole time he’s been here.”

“Dad, he’s my mate. It’s… intense. We should never have been separated like that, it’s unnatural.”

“If you ask me, the way he’s looking at you right now is what’s unnatural…” He grumbled and I bit back a laugh. I reached out and looped my arms around his waist.

“Trust me, Amon is the best person I know. He’s just…broken, Dad. Baby steps. In time he will relax and you’ll see… he’ll be more… normal.”

Whatever that meant. I pulled away and looked back at my mate, who was still staring at us from where he waited in the shadows. At least I hoped he would be able to relax. The muscle pulsing in his jaw was a good indicator of how stressed he was that I wasn’t within reach. It couldn’t be good for him, to be so anxious over something so small.

“I just want you to be safe. I don’t want you to be tied down to someone who won’t let you go if you want to leave.” He said, and I could see the concern in his eyes.

“You don’t have to worry about that, Dad.” I whispered. “I’m never going to want to leave.”

He searched my eyes, and I could tell he didn’t believe me.

“I feel like that’s what every eighteen year old says about their first boyfriend.” He murmured and I shook my head.

“This isn’t like that.” I explained. “We are two pieces of the same soul. I couldn’t leave him, even in death. I would search through the next life and the one after that to find him again, and he would do the same for me.”

Jeremy pursed his lips and sighed.

“If you say so.” He shot another dark look at Amon, who just waited in silence for me to return to his side. “Just… try to get him to chill on the groping when I’m around to see it.”

I laughed and nodded, patting his arm.

“I’ll see what I can do.”

Amon

‘Alexa, Play ‘Beige’ by Yoke Lore.’

True to her word, Raven led me back to our room, and I immediately felt more relaxed the moment the door shut behind us.

“He’s right, you know.” I said, watching as she changed into one of the black, silk slips I loved so much.

“Hmm?” She asked, tossing her inky hair over her shoulder and peering up at me with those large, dark eyes.

“I’ll never let you go.” I said, sliding toward her. I snaked one hand around her waist and the other up into her hair, tilting her head back so I could more easily examine her face. I still couldn’t believe she was here in front of me. That I could just touch her and smell her and taste her whenever I liked.

“Good thing I would never want you to.”

I closed my eyes and rubbed the tip of my nose against hers, feeling a rush of guilt well through my chest. She was so pure, and young and innocent.

She was good, and I was a monster. My hands were dripping in the blood of the innocent and my soul was caked black with centuries of sin. I knew what her father had said was true.

She had her whole life ahead of her, but she had been chained to a devil who wanted nothing more than to drag her down to hell with him.

“I feel like I’ve trapped an angel in a cage and fed you nothing but darkness.” I murmured against her lips. “I wish I was a better male. I would set you free.”
