Bounced back inside the boat –

And exploded.

BOOM!

The entire boat went up in a fireball.

Every one of our men screamed with joy.

“FUCKIN’ GREAT SHOT!” Adriano yelled over the earpiece I was wearing. Lars had one, too.

Lars grinned as he made his way back up to the front. “Just lucky.”

Adriano laughed. “Yeah, well, I’d rather be lucky than good ANY day.”

“Let’s try to be both,” I said as I handed the wheel back to Lars.

There was an explosion somewhere on the water. It was far enough away that it was faint, but the sound was unmistakable.

My heart froze in my chest when I heard it.

“What happened?” Aurelio asked with a huge grin.

“Oof,” Zollner exhaled as he peered through his rifle scope. “It seems our enemies have drawn first blood. Quite a bit of blood, actually.”

Aurelio’s smirk quickly faded.

Zollner turned to him and smiled with Pollyanna-ish optimism. “At least they were mercenaries, ja? Rent-a-cops – is that the term?”

“Awwww,” I said with fake sympathy. “Did your bad guys bite the big one?”

Aurelio glared at me hatefully as he spoke to Zollner. “When they reach the island… make sure you kill Massimo first.”

My stomach twisted with fear.

“With pleasure,” Zollner giggled as he looked back through his scope.

After Lars blew up the boat, the other mercenaries gave us a wide berth. The most we had to deal with was a few potshots that didn’t even come close to hitting us.

Within minutes, we entered the main bay surrounding Venice.

The island of San Michele was so close to the city that its outline blended with Venice’s – all except the church’s bell tower, which towered above everything else.

As we raced towards the island, our boats split up.

Lars and I would go to the eastern side. There was a boat dock there where we would disembark.

Adriano would go around the island and get out on the west.

The third boat would split the difference and land on the south shore.
