CRACK.

The fact that I’d been shot at before I was five feet off the boat stunned me for a second –

But Lars never broke stride as he raced for the wall. He knew it was the only thing that would shield us from Zollner in the bell tower.

“RUN!” he screamed.

I immediately sprinted for the wall, too.

By the time I reached safety, the other men were almost there –

Except for Lorenzo, who had stumbled getting out of the boat.

His chest exploded in a cloud of red.

A split second later, we heard the crack! of the gunshot as the sound finally caught up with the supersonic bullet.

“Ha! Got him,” Zollner said gleefully.

“Was it one of the brothers?” Aurelio asked. “Or the blond-haired guy?”

“No, but their turn is coming soon enough,” Zollner said confidently. “We won’t count the first shot because of Massimo’s clever little shield, so let’s say… I’m one for one.”

Clack-clack –

Clink.

I felt like I was going to throw up.

Shit.

I stared helplessly at Lorenzo. He lay on his back, choking on his own blood as a dark stain spread out beneath him on the gravel.

Lorenzo had fought alongside me, Lars, and Adriano back in Florence.

He was a good man –

And now he was dying.

One of the other guys, Rocco, moved to help Lorenzo –

“NO!” Lars yelled as he flung his arm out and stopped him. “That’s just what the sniper wants. You go out there and you’re dead.”

Rocco watched in anguish as Lorenzo lay twitching on the ground. “But – h-he had on a bulletproof vest – ”

“The sniper’s using rounds that can get through our armor,” Lars warned us.
