“No pot brownies?” Gunnar asked, disappointed.

“No pot brownies.”

“Aw…”

When we returned to his apartment, I told him I was going to grab my things and get a hotel room.

“Dude, you can totally crash out on the couch,” he offered.

I thought of all the greasy fast-food wrappers and bong juice stains and shook my head. “Thanks, but I’m good.”

“You can have the bed – I’ll take the couch.”

“I appreciate the offer, but no.”

“Aw, c’mon – ”

“When was the last time you washed your sheets?”

Gunnar looked up in the sky as though the answer was written in the stars. “Um…”

“Do you have any other sheets?”

He looked at me blankly. “…other sheets?”

I smiled grimly. “I’ll just go to a hotel.”

I grabbed my stuff and called an Uber, then used my phone to scan Hotels.com for vacancies.

“I’m gonna see you again before you go, aren’t I?” Gunnar asked sadly.

“Of course. I’ll come by tomorrow morning and we can grab breakfast before I leave.”

“What time tomorrow morning?” he asked warily.

“How about 8? That way I can get a flight to London around noon.”

Gunnar made a face. “Um… could you come back around noon and book the flight for three or four o’clock?”

I stared at him. “Seriously?”

“Dude, I never get up before 11 anymore. I stopped that shit as soon as I left the military.”

“Fine,” I said. I figured it was the least I could do after he’d researched Alistair for me. “See you at noon.”

“Alright, buddy.” He grinned and gave me a bear hug. “See you tomorrow.”

Just then, the Uber arrived. I waved goodbye and got in the back seat.

As we drove away, I sniffed my clothes. I stunk like weed just from hanging out in Gunnar’s apartment for a couple of hours. No telling what I would smell like after an entire night.

I just sighed and chuckled as the Uber sped away into the night.

Ichose a five-star hotel. I figured I could afford it, given the bonus sitting in my bank account.

It was a wise choice. Despite it being after midnight, I got the desk clerk to have my clothes dry-cleaned and returned by 11 AM the next morning. It would be well worth the extra 60 euros just so the rest of my clothes wouldn’t smell like Gunnar’s apartment.
