“As of when?” I asked suspiciously.

“It says in his file that he prepaid for three weeks, which ended yesterday.”

“Did he check out at the front desk?”

“No, I don’t think so… no, he didn’t. The billing department called and left a message on his phone, but he never got back to them.”

“Then how do you know he just never came back?”

The manager peered closely at the screen. “It says here that when housekeeping went to clean the room, they didn’t find any belongings.”

“Nothing? No clothes, no shoes?”

“Nothing.”

That was odd.

Even if he’d been packing for three weeks, Lars wouldn’t have taken everything he owned.

“What about the room safe?” I asked.

“It says our maintenance worker had to reset the safe so housekeeping could get the room ready, but there was nothing inside.”

“You’re sure?”

“Quite sure. I have the report right here – ‘safe was empty.’”

“Is it possible that the maintenance worker isn’t telling the truth?”

The manager drew himself up in indignation. “I assure you, ma’am, our staff does not steal from our guests.”

“Can I talk to the maintenance worker?”

“No, you may not!” the manager said in irritation.

I leaned forward threateningly. “Do we need to call that phone number again?”

The manager swallowed. “I’ll… I’ll see if he’s available.”

I ended up talking to both the maintenance worker who had reset the safe and the maid who had cleaned the room. I believed both of them when they told me there hadn’t been any clothes or belongings in the room. Everything was gone.

I thanked them, then walked out of the hotel in a daze.

The awful truth crashed down on me: Lars had left the hotel and taken everything with him.

His clothes… his laptop… and his phone.

Which meant he was intentionally avoiding my calls.

He had ghosted me.

I sank down on a bus stop bench and burst into tears.

He left me!

He told me he loved me, and he left me…

And he never even said goodbye…
