“I’m going to go talk to him,” I said decisively.

“Not YET, I said,” Adriano snapped.

I looked at him, a little pissed off. He immediately backed off.

“Dario’s the don now,” he said in a calmer voice. “It’s different than it was before.”

“Why’s it different?” I asked – although, deep down, I already knew he was right.

“Look… I know you two were tight back in San Vittore – but this is like you and your buddy were both sergeants, and then your buddy got promoted to five-star general overnight. You don’t go around telling five-star generals, ‘Hey, dude, knock it off.’ I’m his fuckin’ brother, and I wouldn’t even say that sort of shit to him now.”

“So what are we supposed to do?”

“I don’t know… just watch and see what he does. If he crosses a line, then we talk to him. But until that happens… just be cool.”

“‘Just be cool,’” I repeated mockingly.

And ignore the fact that the leader of our organization – which appears to be in the middle of a gang war – seems to have his eye on a 20-year-old virgin.

Adriano shook his head as he started up the stairs. “All I know is, we shoulda fuckin’ got him laid as soon as he got out of prison.”

I was beginning to agree with him.

Ididn’t follow Adriano’s order, though.

I’m sure he thought it was an order. I just considered it strongly worded advice.

Instead, I caught Dario as he was walking through the hallway the next morning when no one else was around.

“Hey, can I talk to you for a minute?” I asked.

“Of course,” he said pleasantly. “What’s going on?”

“I’m a little concerned about the girl.”

Dario gave me that enigmatic smile again. “Don’t be – it worked out for the best. I think keeping her here will convince her father to talk.”

“That’s not what I’m concerned about.”

“Then what?”

I cleared my throat. “I heard you said something to her father last night about not taking her virginity unless she begged you to.”

Dario looked surprised at first. Then he smirked. “Did Adriano tell you that? After the two of you left us last night?”

“I had to pry it out of him,” I lied, not wanting to get Adriano in trouble – because he’d sure as shit make me pay for it.

“I’m sure,” Dario said sardonically.

“I just want to be clear… she’s not in any danger, right?”

Dario’s expression hardened. “What do you take me for?”

“Look, I know you’re an honorable man,” I said quickly. “I just wanted to confirm… that nothing’s going to happen to her.”

“I will not hurt her.”
