As soon as he saw my face, he grinned and asked in Swedish, “Uh-oh – didn’t go so well getting into the hot lady’s pants, huh?”

I glared at him. “That wasn’t what it was about.”

“What was it about, then?” he asked cheerfully.

“I warned her about Delgado.”

“Ohhhhhh.”

Gunnar knew all about Delgado. I’d told him as soon as I’d found out.

I’d warned all the other Swedish guys in my unit, too, but they were the only people I’d told – until three minutes ago, anyway.

“And she didn’t take it as your opening gambit at getting into her pants?” Gunnar continued with a smile. “Or she DID take it that way, and that’s the problem?”

“She took it as me questioning her competence.”

“Oh, well, that’s no good. You’re gonna have to do some serious damage control, my brother, if you wanna get in her pants.”

“What? No – I’m not trying to get into her pants – ”

“Why not?”

“Because not everything is about…”

I trailed off.

Delgado was walking back into the building 70 feet away.

As the Spaniard disappeared inside, I asked Gunnar, “You came out with the other guys, right? Did anybody else stick around after the briefing?”

“I don’t think so – they all went to the chow hall. Everybody except you and the hot soldier lady, that is.”

Rachel hadn’t left yet…

Everyone else in the briefing had come out…

But Delgado was the only one going back in.

I started to get a bad feeling.

“See you in a minute,” I said as I headed back into the building.

“Gonna try for Round Two?”

“Something like that.”

“Go get ‘er, brother!” Gunnar called after me.

Iwalked past a half-dozen offices. When I got to where Delgado had entered the building, I turned a corner and saw him at the far end of the hallway, exiting through another door.

Rachel was nowhere in sight.

Maybe I’d gotten it all wrong. Maybe I was being paranoid…

But I didn’t think so.
