Which was completely deserted.

As we’d entered the grounds, I’d seen signs that said tourists were allowed until 12:45 AM –

Which meant Alistair had pulled some sort of ungodly strings with his counterparts in the French government.

All around us, the lights of Paris glowed like a dream.

“Alistair – what did you do?” I gasped.

He grinned. “I did everything possible to make this moment as special as possible.”

He pulled out a small box and opened it to reveal a ring with an absolutely massive diamond.

“Rachel… would you do me the honor of becoming my wife?”

The moment I had been expecting had come.

I had prepared for it… and I’d already made my decision.

I’m going to move on.

“Yes,” I said, and kissed him after he slipped the ring on my finger.

To my surprise, I was actually happy.

Not nearly as ecstatically happy as I’d been in the past with another man…

But happy enough.

And that was good enough.

And then… everything came crashing down.

It was a week after we’d gotten back from Paris. The ring still felt odd on my finger.

We’d taken off early from work to fix dinner at my place. One of the perks of being engaged to the Director of Operations.

We were drinking wine and chopping vegetables when the doorbell rang.

I frowned. “Who the hell…?”

No one ever came to my house. At least, I couldn’t recall anyone in the last five years I’d lived here.

As a good little secret agent, I had installed cameras at every door and window. Never knew when one of your enemies might track you down and try to kill you at home.

I turned to look at the monitor on the wall –

And it felt like every drop of blood in my body suddenly turned to ice.

Lars was on my doorstep.

Alistair saw my expression and said, “What?”

Then he turned to look at the monitor –

And the blood completely drained from his face, too.
