“I’m fine!” Niccolo replied nervously.

“We’re okay!” Adriano yelled on behalf of himself and Bianca.

“Stay down!” I shouted, then pulled out the hand-held radio I kept in my jacket. “Control, what the fuck is going on?!”

Shortly after starting my job nine months before, I had made Niccolo install 150 surveillance cameras inside the mansion and across the grounds. All of them were linked to a central command center on the second floor.

It had paid off the night that the Turk had invaded the compound and we had advance warning –

And it paid off now.

Whoever was in the command center answered immediately. “We’ve got movement on Camera 86 – they’re running through the olive groves on the south side of the property.”

“Do not engage!” I snapped. “Repeat, DO NOT ENGAGE!”

“Alessandra!” Dario cried out in panic.

“Eyes on Falcon!” I shouted into the radio, using the code name for Alessandra.

Another voice radioed back, “We’ve got her, third floor!”

“Get her to the safe room NOW! And somebody meet me at exit 12 with a scoped rifle!”

“Copy that.”

I looked at Dario. “Stay down,” I ordered.

Then I scrambled across the kitchen on all fours, heading for the hallway.

“Where are you going?!” Adriano yelled.

“To kill the asshole who shot at us,” I snarled.

As I raced down the hallway, I pictured the faces of the dead mercenaries in Massimo’s photos. A single word echoed in my mind:

Wagner…

I reached the exit in seconds. One of my men, Rocco, was waiting for me at the door with an Mk 13 sniper rifle.

I had a pistol on me – I always had a pistol on me – but the shooter already had a massive head start, and I needed to be able to take him out from a distance.

I grabbed the rifle from Rocco and flung open the door.

“You need backup?” Rocco asked.

“No – stay close to the house and make sure nobody gets in.”

“Got it,” he said, then shut and locked the door behind me as I dashed out onto the lawn.

I’d drilled my men for months for this very scenario.

Now we would see if all that preparation paid off.

“Control, what’s the shooter’s position?” I yelled into my radio as I ran.

“Approaching the south wall near Camera 107.”
