Isay told me Pavel didn’t care about revenge, but I knew it was bullshit. Of course he wants to avenge his brother. I would if I were him.

Pavel wants me to suffer. I took someone he cares about, so now, he wants to take everything from me. And that’s exactly what Luna is to me.

Everything.

Laughter floats through the window from the patio below. I’m out of my office door and down the stairs before I can even think about what I’m doing. It’s all instinct. The protective urge to have Luna in my sights and close is something I can’t deny. Not after everything that has happened.

I throw open both patio doors. Luna and Kayla are still laughing, but the sound cuts off as the doors bang off the side of the house.

Luna frowns. “Yakov, is everything?—”

“It’s time to go.” I gesture for Kayla to follow me. “Now.”

The two women look at each other, confused. I can’t help but look over their heads to scan the fence line. I shored up the perimeter fence once Gregory started venturing outside, but I should install more cameras.

“Where are we going?” Luna stands up and walks towards me. Her shirt is tight and the swell of her stomach is impossible to miss.

Mine. The thought rings through me like a gong. She is mine and I’ll do anything to keep her safe.

“We aren’t going anywhere.” I pull her close and point at Kayla. “But it’s time for her to leave. Now.”

“Oh.” Kayla blinks at Luna and can’t bring herself to look at me. She sweeps crumbs off of her lap as she stands up. “Yeah, okay… I should probably get home, anyway. I need to?—”

“We were still talking.” Luna pulls away from me, but I keep hold of her hand. “I told Kayla she could stay for dinner. We were going to watch a movie with Mariya.”

Mariya. Fuck. I pull out my phone and fire off a message to Isay. Get my sister home now. Watch your back. Pavel is out for blood.

Then I message for a car to pick Kayla up in front of the house in two minutes.

“Yakov? Are you listening to me?” Luna asks.

I pocket my phone. “I heard you. But it’s time for her to go. There’s a car waiting for you out front, Kayla.”

Kayla pulls Luna into a hug. “It was good to see you. We’ll do it again soon, okay?”

“Hold on, I want you to stay,” Luna says back. “Just give me a second and I’ll?—”

Kayla shakes her head. “I’m always only a phone call away. Do you hear me? No matter what happens or what you need, I’m here for you.”

The message is clear: if this asshole fucks up, I’ll come get you.

Kayla has no idea what she’s promising. No one is taking Luna away from me. Not Kayla and definitely not Pavel fucking Gustev.

She is mine.

Hope steps outside, hands folded behind her back. “There is a car waiting for you, Ms. Stevenson.”

Kayla and Luna hug one more time, but my mind is racing. Isay is going to bring Mariya home. There are guards stationed outside of Nik’s room at the hospital, but I should change them out more often to make sure the men there are always fresh. Pavel was threatening Luna, but it could’ve been a misdirect. He might want me to batten down the hatches at home while he strikes at the hospital.

I want to believe he wouldn’t try to kill a man who is already barely clinging to life, but I know better than to underestimate a Gustev.

Hope sees Kayla out. As soon as the patio doors close, Luna whips towards me. “What on earth is going on? What was that about?”

“She was here all day. It was time for her to go.”

“Says who?” she snaps. “You told me you were going to be busy today. It’s not like I have anywhere to be.”

Not anymore. She isn’t going anywhere. Luna isn’t leaving this house until Pavel is no longer a threat. I can’t lose her like I did last time. I won’t.
