He pulls his hand out to show me, but I feel him tense behind me. I look down at his hand and see why.

There’s a smear of blood across his fingers.

It’s not a lot. Just a small spread of pink blood.

My face flames with embarrassment. “Sorry. The apps say that there can be bleeding after sex. I should have warned you that it could happen.”

He freezes. I’m sure he’s disgusted. He must be thinking I’m?—

“We’re going to the hospital.”

“Wait, what? Hold on. I?—”

“You’re bleeding, Luna. We’re going. Not an argument.”

“I know, but this is… it’s normal. Everything says this can happen. I mean, it could even be that your fingernail scratched me when you were—This is not a big deal, I promise.”

He grabs my chin and looks deep into my eyes. “You are a big deal to me. Now, get out of the shower and get dressed. I’m going to call Dr. Jenkins.”

LUNA

I wait in the car, per Yakov’s very clear and very threatening orders, while he gets a wheelchair from the hospital lobby. He drove me here himself because he “didn’t trust anyone else behind the wheel.”

That doesn’t mean we came alone. Oh, no—I have an entourage now. Two SUVs full of his men in front and behind me. I feel like I’m the president.

People walking down the sidewalk towards the hospital keep doing double takes. Based on their frowns when they see me, I can tell they were expecting to see someone famous sitting in the passenger seat.

Sorry to disappoint.

When Yakov walks through the double doors with a wheelchair, I yell through the window, “I’m fine. I can walk.”

It’s the fifth time I’ve said it and it has just as much impact as it did the first time I said it: none whatsoever. Yakov ignores me, opens my door, and lifts me out of the car and sits me in the wheelchair.

“The bleeding stopped before we even left the house, Yakov. It was just a little spotting. That’s normal.”

“I look forward to Dr. Jenkins confirming that here in a few minutes.”

I groan and sink down in the wheelchair.

In a way, it’s sweet. Yakov is concerned about me and the baby. He wants to take care of us. I can see how lucky I am that I have him here.

In another way, it’s maddening. I’m telling him I’m okay, but he doesn’t believe me. He’s forcing me to go to the hospital to make sure his baby is safe. I know he cares about me, too, but it’s hard not to feel like the throwaway box holding the real treasure.

Yakov wheels me inside and straight past the front desk to an open exam room. Dr. Jenkins is already inside.

“Come in, both of you,” he says, closing the door behind us. “Let’s get you checked out, Luna.”

“I’m sorry to bother you with this.”

“Don’t apologize. It’s what I pay him for,” Yakov says sharply.

Dr. Jenkins nods. “I am here to make sure you and your baby are healthy. It’s not a problem to ease your worries.”

“I don’t have any worries,” I mutter.

“She had some bleeding,” Yakov says, talking over me.
