I lean in and clap him on the back.

“Congratulations, Yakov.” He whistles long and low. “You’re going to be a dad.”

“To twins.”

He freezes for a second and then lets out a loud whoop. After we convince the nurses who come rushing in that he is fine and they don’t need to check his vitals, he shakes his head at me. “Of course you’d knock her up with twins. You can’t ever be normal. One baby would be too tame for you.”

“Twins might be too wild even for me.”

“Nah, you can handle it,” he says. “You’ll be a great dad.”

Nik grins and I can see how much he needed this good news. Something to look forward to.

Something to fight for.

Then his smile fades and I see him shift back into business mode. “So where are Mariya and Luna?”

“Safe. That’s all I’m going to say here. I’m the only one who knows where they are.”

“What’s the plan to get Pavel?”

“I have men working on it.”

“That doesn’t answer the question, brother. What is the plan? Give me something to do.”

I shake my head. “You already have something to do. You need to focus on getting better. I can handle Pavel.”

“The only thing that is going to help me get better is to think about something outside of this fucking room!” he snaps. “You know I can’t sit here and do nothing. I’ll lose my mind. Put me to use.”

I don’t want to. Nik needs to rest. Dr. Tung said it’s the best medicine for the human body. But I also know that I don’t have a fucking thing on Pavel despite all the men I have assigned to the task. I don’t know where he is or what his plan is. Until I figure it out, I can’t be with Luna.

“Yakov,” Nik pushes. “Come on. Just let me make some calls.”

I grimace. “Fine. You can look into Akim’s old weapons dealer.”

“Budimir?” he asks, a smile spreading across his face.

“He’s all but disappeared since I killed Akim. If he’s still working for the Gustev Bratva, he’s way underground.”

Nik starts nodding before I’m even finished. “Consider it done. I’ll find him and let you know.”

There’s no doubt in his voice. No hesitation at all. Nik is looking into it; I know he’s going to get the job done. He should be looking into physical therapy and dealing with his new prognosis, but I can’t deny that it’s really fucking good to have him back.

Suddenly, the door slams open. Isay tears into the room, his face pale. “Something is wrong with Luna.”

There isn’t time to ask questions or think. No goodbyes. I stand up and sprint out of the room.

LUNA

Vera and Usev are whispering in the kitchen. The door to the basement is open for the first time since Yakov escorted us downstairs, but Mariya and I are sitting on the steps like bullets are going to start flying through the windows if we set foot on the main floor.

Who knows? They actually might. I don’t know anything anymore.

“What are they saying?” I ask, nodding towards our hosts and massaging my bump. The cramps have eased slightly, but anxiety is a tight fist in my chest.

“Vera doesn’t have any equipment here to examine you properly and they can’t get my brother to answer his fucking phone, either.” Mariya slaps her burner down on the stairs. “What is the point in these useless-ass phones if he isn’t even going to answer when I call?”
