“I’m sorry,” Karsyn whispers, coming forward, eyes going to where the other witch was being pulled backward. “I don’t know what happened. I was sitting outside with Daniel and Big Daddy watching Sage play . . . I need the connection to the earth . . . and then I was here,” she explains, her voice timid and uncertain.

It’s then I take in what she’s wearing. A long black maxi dress that falls to her feet, the straps on it thin, barely enough material to hold it in place. The scent from the clothing has me looking at Dane.

“I’d gone and gotten a few things last night for her so she had something to wear.” He shrugs, “Left it in my room this morning, but Dad knew I had the bags of stuff.”

“Appreciate it,” I grumble lowly and hold out a hand for Karsyn to take, which she does instantly. Pulling her into my side, I give her my heat, feeling her emotions. I return my attention to Orpheus to find him staring at Karsyn, which draws a growl from me.

“Apologies, Corbin, but to see such a creature is rare. Witch and shifter, but she’s not just any witch. Not like the blood witches. As she’s connected to the earth itself,” Orpheus remarks, clears his throat, and rises along with Aziz, sticking his hand out toward Karsyn. “I’m Orpheus.”

Karsyn reaches out, taking his hand tentatively. “The vampire king. I know of you,” she murmurs and leans farther into me. “You do not have to offer me your protection in order for me to cast the enchantment to protect those who can’t protect themselves. I willingly will do what is needed.”

The fuck she will.

“Regardless, you have our protection,” Orpheus remarks, releasing her hand, eyes coming back to me. “I wouldn’t take advantage of such a gift.”

And I know what he’s insinuating without speaking the words out loud.

“Syn, baby, what do you need to do this?” I ask, drawing her attention to me before she can refuse protection again and still do something for the vampires.

Karsyn sucks in a breath, closes her eyes, and starts speaking words I’ve never heard before. Her voice becomes more like a melody as she continues, her words going faster. The longer she goes, the more I notice her body weakening. Pulling her more into my side, I lent her my strength, knowing she was still weak as it was. I shouldn’t have even allowed her to do this right now. Plus, I also want to know what the fuck’s up with her vanishing act. Granted, this time, it wasn’t her disappearing from me. Instead, she’d come to me. But what brought her to me is what I want to know.

A breeze starts to flow around us when there shouldn’t have been in the closed space we’re all within. Suddenly, Karsyn stops, and her body slumps deeper into mine. “It’s done,” she whispers. “No vampire who lives within Redwich can be enchanted by a witch to do their bidding, same for shifters,” she finishes with a breath and collapses in my arms.

“Fuck.” I scoop my mate in my arms, her head lulling back. I readjust her in my grasp until her head rests against my chest before meeting Orpheus’s gaze once more to find him staring at her in astonishment.

“Your mate just did more than any of us could have imagined could be done,” Aziz utters.

“I know,” I grunt, smelling the scent of fresh blood, and look to the blood witch off to the side to find the witch seems frozen in place, blood running down her cheeks from lifeless eyes. “Fuckin’ hell.” Grimacing, I glance at my brothers to see them also staring at the witch. It’s as if Karsyn sucked the life out of the witch to make the spell. Does she even know she did it?

“We’re out of here, I need to get her back to the clubhouse,” I declare, more than ready to have her back where I know she’s safe. After what she just did, I don’t know where else she can be that isn’t.

“I will send out the command to the other vampires and inform them they are to protect both your mate and Cyrus’s. If your mate is as she is, then your brothers will be just as powerful and in need of protection from those who will give it.”

I don’t bother responding, instead, I carry Karsyn out of Dyrk and straight into the bright sun. She’d been outside when she came to me and said she needed to connect to the earth. I’m sure now, more than ever, she needs that connection after what she’s just done, and I need to give her that.

Turning to Dane, I place her in his arms. “Hold her while I shift, then secure her to my back. Have someone come with a trailer to pick my bike up.”

“I’m coming with you,” Justice states.

“Same, Prez,” Tucker remarks.

Abel nods, and Dane gives me a look that says he’s not leaving his sister’s side.

“Then make a call for someone to pick our bikes up. I’m taking her to the meadow behind my house.” It’s a perfect spot to allow her to connect with the earth, and I can focus on her and not the fact that she’s not where I can fully protect her.

Stepping back, I glance around, seeing no one around, and call my wolf forward, allowing him to take over to take care of our mate. Together we’ll see getting her back to safety. Once there, I’ll fix what I fucked up early because I have a feeling it was the bond between us that brought her to me. If it is, then we’re all fucked.

Chapter Sixteen

Karsyn

“Open your eyes, Karsyn. Wake up for me.”

The sound of Corbin’s gruff voice breaks through the bleak darkness I find myself in. Usually, when I find myself like this, it’s cold, leaving me freezing, but I don’t feel any of that. It’s warm like the sun.

Slowly, I open my eyes to find Corbin standing over me, blocking out the sun in his wolf form. My heart instantly starts beating faster, but not out of fear. It’s the sight of his wolf, its beauty and majestic form, sends a thrill through my body. He’s beautiful and captivating.I should fear this shifter, yet he calms a part of me I never understood.

“What happened?” I ask him, uncertain of why he’s standing over me in wolf form. I don’t remember running from him again. Not that I would.
