“We need a formal agreement with the courts for that,” Stella reminded her.

“You shouldn’t need anything. He should want to support his kids. It’s a dick move that he dumped all the financial burden on you and fucked off.”

“You don’t have to remind me. I know what kind of man he is now.”

Stella looked completely exhausted by the statement, and Luna swallowed her words. I knew she and Stella still had issues because of Stella marrying Rodney to begin with, and Luna probably had to keep checking herself so she wasn’t saying I told you so at every turn.

My automatic urge was to fix the situation. I couldn’t change how Stella’s husband behaved, but if I could alleviate the financial burden of her situation while improving things for myself at the same time, I would do that.

“If you get me a contract to look over, we can sort out the actual move in,” I told Stella.

Luna beamed at me.

“I’ll poke through the legal templates and make sure I do it all properly,” Stella promised.

“Sounds great.”

Now all that was left was to tell Mom I was moving out. Joy.

“Loons!” Allie appeared next to my cubicle, nearly giving me a heart attack. “Did you hear about Kevin?!”

“What about Kevin?” I had barely seen a glimpse of him the last few weeks. I wasn’t sure if he was deliberately avoiding me or not, though it was certainly my preference.

“They’re sending him back to Chicago! He asked to be transferred.”

The weight of him hanging over me every day in the office fell to the floor. He was going to be gone and I never had to worry about seeing him here again.

“Holy shit.”

“Right? I’m so glad he’s going to be gone. It took a lot of willpower to not hit him with my chair every time I saw him.”

My computer pinged and I glanced over at the notification for a meeting with HR. “That’s weird.”

Allie hovered over my shoulder. “What do they want?”

“I guess I’ll find out.” I accepted the meeting invitation that was due to start in fifteen minutes. “I’ll let you know when I’m done.”

My brain swirled with all manner of distressing possibilities. The fact that it was coming at the same time Kevin’s transfer announcement worried me. I might be quitting sooner than I’d thought. I kept that to myself, not wanting to worry Allie over nothing.

I finished up the task I was working on and locked my computer before heading upstairs. I knocked on the HR officer’s door and gave a little wave to let them know I was there.

“Ms. Barlow, thank you for being so prompt.”

I was ushered inside and sat in the seat opposite her. “No problem. What’s the meeting about?”

“I’m afraid we’ve had some accusations against you. I wanted to talk to you about them.”

“Accusations?” I sat there, completely incredulous.

“Yes, for harassment in the workplace. Given the actions that have been taken by the employee in question to avoid you, I’m inclined to believe that what we’ve been told is accurate.”

Realization smacked me like a brick. “Kevin’s a real piece of work. He harasses me at and outside of work, and then he tries to get me in trouble for it?”

“I’m not at liberty to reveal the name of the employee involved.”

“You don’t have to. Only one person working here has a vendetta against me.”

“If there’s been harassment against you in the office, why haven’t you reported it?”
