Her kiss drew me back to the waking world. “Have a bath with me?” she asked sleepily.
I couldn’t possibly get up with her on top of me, and I had no desire to make her move. “Can we teleport there?”
Luna laughed and kissed me again before climbing off me and coaxing me out of the nest. We sat in the tub while the water filled, the heat slowly slinking up our bodies. Luna settled in my lap, her purr roaring like a buzz saw.
“Happy?” I kissed her forehead, adjusting her weight so I was a little more comfortable.
“You make it pretty difficult to not be.”
“Any regrets about doing this here with me instead of alphas at the club?”
She shook her head, tucking her face against my throat. “I don’t know if I can go back to that.”
A possessive growl curled out of me. “Does that mean you would want to do another heat with me?”
“Yeah, but only if you want to do one with me. I don’t want you to get hurt.”
“I’ll do better next time,” I promised. “I have more time to prepare and maybe I can stay on the alpha synthetics.”
“You don’t have to take medication just for me.”
“I wouldn’t be. I know it’ll make the heats easier, but it makes the rest of my life easier too. I never would’ve found that out if it weren’t for you.”
“Are they safe to take long-term?”
“I don’t think they know that yet.”
Luna let out a quiet huff. “They should hurry up and figure it out so they can tell you.”
“I don’t mind helping them figure it out. I like knowing other betas could be helped by my experience. Do you like me better on these synthetics?”
Luna snorted. “What kind of question is that? You’re still Luca, and you rail me six ways to Sunday with or without the synthetics. The part I care about is how you treat me, and you don’t need anything to enhance that.”
It took three more days before I stopped having spikes. Three blissful and glorious days that were nothing but sleep, delicious food, hot baths, and leisurely fucking. Every scent, taste, and feel of Luca’s body was branded into mine. He was sleeping peacefully next to me, one of his hands curled around my waist.
Everything we had talked about was still fresh in my brain, though I hadn’t been brave enough to bring it up again. I’d told him I wanted more, and that wasn’t a lie brought on by the hormone soup of a heat. I didn’t know how to trust that something this good could work out. Loving Luca was still as dangerous as it had ever been, because I knew the higher we climbed, the harder I was going to fall.
His fingers flexed, distracting me, as if even in sleep he could tell my thoughts were starting to spiral.
Society expected certain steps out of a relationship. I had sworn off most of them years ago. I wasn’t brave enough yet to ask Luca about his thoughts on bonding and marriage. The permanency of bonding scared the shit out of me, but not quite as much as the permanency of children. At least a marriage could be revoked. But even thinking that made me feel like an asshole. I sighed, realizing for what felt like the millionth time over this heat that I needed to sort my shit out. Luca was right that I was planning for this to end, but the reality that he was too good for someone like me felt impossible to shake.
I let out a surprised squeak when Luca dragged me closer, his tongue sweeping over my throat.
“Burning lemons bad,” he mumbled. “Need sweet lemons.”
He sucked at the scent gland until I was writhing in his arms, giggling when he rolled over to play bite all over me.
“Quit making me laugh!” I shrieked. “I have to pee.”
He rolled off me and let me scamper out of the nest, and into the bathroom to collect myself. I zoned out on the toilet and startled at the soft thump against the door.
“You’re taking so long. I’m getting lonely out here.”
I might be fully lucid, but Luca was still experiencing a bit of a lingering high.
“You’re as bad as a cat,” I called back. I finished up, and the moment I opened the door, he scooped me up into his arms. “Where are you getting all this energy from? Aren’t you tired?”
“Never too tired to hold you.”
