I took my time breathing her in instead of speaking, threading my fingers into her hair and working on warming up the crackly purr I had apparently developed.

“Drive safe,” I said, instead of what I wanted to. “Let me know when you’re home.”

I couldn’t get a read on what that softness in her expression meant.

“Same to you, Luca. Sweet dreams when you get there.”

I watched her get into her car and drive away before I got into my own, wishing more than anything that she was still by my side.

Allie:

Nicky’s okay

She was with the pack and phoned Sidney once she was out of the haze

Relief was a tsunami when the text came through from Allie the next night. We’d all been waiting with bated breath for news, terrified it would be the worst while hoping for the best.

Luna:

Thank fuck

Happy for her that she got laid but JFC

Allie:

Right???

I’m so relieved though

The Marinos have been a mess

Luna:

I don’t blame them one bit for that

I guess we probably won’t be hearing from her again until the heat’s fully over?

Allie:

That’s my guess too

I wouldn’t want to be talking to anyone during a heat

Luna:

Amen sister

Luca looked up at me with watery eyes. We’d both gotten the text at the same time as his shift was ending.

“I know Nicky is a grown-ass woman, but putting a tracker on that girl would’ve solved a lot of problems,” I said, with a laugh. “At least she’s safe.”

Luca nodded, his bottom lip wobbling.

“Come here.” I wrapped my arms snugly around his chest and got my purr rolling while Luca let all of that built-up anxiety flood out. Luca’s boss was on standby in case he had to leave suddenly, and when she saw him crying, she approached us quietly.

“His sister is okay,” I informed her. “These are relief tears.”

“I’m so glad to hear. Luca, you should go. There’s only a few minutes left of work anyway. I’ll finish closing up for the night.”
