And in other news …

Cole Spencer and Amber St. James celebrated their engagement last night at Leo’s Little Italy.

The television in the living room starts to say. I drop my sponge and mindlessly walk out of the bathroom and drop onto the sofa. An image of Cole on one knee, an open ring box in hand as he looks up at a surprised Amber flashes across the screen until a video starts to play.

“Amber St. James, this last year has been full of ups and downs, and I never would have made it through without you by my side. You’ve been my rock, my guiding light in the storms. Will you make me the luckiest man alive and be my wife?”

Acidic bile burns the back of my throat, and my stomach churns at the sight of him offering her—of all people, why does it have to be her?—a ring.

Cole went as far as to buy a round of champagne for every diner present when she said yes.

Fuzzy Blue Lights plays from my pocket, and I fish out my phone. Not looking at my screen, I accept the call.

“Hello,” I say robotically.

“Oh, god, girl. I did it. I got out of my lease, and I’m moving in with you at the end of the month,” an excited Nyx exclaims in my ear.

“That’s fantastic,” I mumble, feigning excitement.

“What happened? Who do I have to kill?” The anger lacing Nyx’s tone is enough to snap me out of the trance I was sucked into.

“What? Nyx?”

“Yah, bitch, who else?”

“I’m sorry, it’s just … It’s Cole.” My voice starts to crack, and I cough to try to hide the way all of this is affecting me.

“Cole was the one at the bar. Hot with the nice ass, right?”

I chuckle a little at the details Nyx is able to remember. “Yes, Nyx. Hot with the nice ass.”

“Okay. So, what the fuck did he do?”

My lungs start to burn, and I rub my free hand down my thigh as I rock in place, trying to release some of the mounting energy coursing through my body.

“Fuck, Devin, listen to the sound of my voice. Tell me three things you can see right now.”

I take a deep breath and reply, “Table. Lamp. Clock.”

“Good girl. Now, two things you can hear.” Nyx’s voice gradually lowers, focusing my mind to keep her in hearing range.

“Refrigerator. Cars.”

“Very good. Now, one thing you can smell.” She inhales deeply, and I mimic her breathing through the line.

My lungs expand with ease as I inhale deeply, filling them completely. I focus my attention on the feeling of my lungs filling with all the smells around me until one scent catches my attention. “Cinnamon,” I whisper and reach out my hand and pick up the throw pillow sitting at the end of my couch. Holding it to my nose, I inhale deeply. Musk and cinnamon—Lucian.

“Devin, are you with me?” Nyx’s concerned voice comes through the line, and I lower the pillow.

“I’m here. Sorry.”

“No, you’re fine. Are you okay?” God, I love this girl.

“I miss you, Nyx. You know that? I can’t wait for you to get here.” Tears flow down my cheeks, all my emotions that I have been bottling up for months come flowing out. “Shit, my makeup.” I wave a hand in front of my face, but I know it’s a waste of good energy.

Nyx laughs, full and heartfelt. “I miss you, too. Now, can you tell me what happened with Cole? What did he do?”
