I sigh and shake my head, "It's not that…" he butts in, "Then tell me what exactly I can do right now, then? Because I know you felt the spark between us, I can even go as far as to say you've probably thought about me as much as I've thought about you over the years."

I give him a small smile and stand before rounding the desk and leaning against it. His eyes take in my skinny jeans and wedged sandals before looking into my eyes. I can feel the spark, and I must admit it scares me. But the thought of putting my family at risk because of who he is, well, that scares me more.

I swallow hard, "Like I said, it's not about that snake."

He narrows his eyes at me and says, "It's Hunter, and you damn well know that, baby."

I give him a smile and say, "My life's a mess, Hunter. All I do is work, and... and I don't want you to take this the wrong way, but you're the president of an MC," he butts in with confusion, "and?" I give him another smile, "Your life can be dangerous, and my family—my parents, my sister—are my everything; I can't put them in danger."

His eyes soften before he steps up to me, his body towering over me as his woodsy, spicy scent overtakes my senses before his big hand cups my cheek, his rough skin sending tingles all through me while his other hand grips my hip. My body hums with instant contentment, which scares the crap out of me.

"I would never allow any danger to surround you or your family. Sarah, I can give you my word on that. All I'm asking is for a chance—just one. If you're not happy, then, well, I won't give up even then; I'll just pursue you as a friend first. But make no mistake, Spitfire; in the end, you will be my old lady."

My heart pounds at his words, a lump forming in my throat. His eyes are tense and sincere, but I just can't. My sister needs me. I shake my head, "You say that now, but what's that bandage on your arm, Hunter?"

I noticed it instantly. The blood coming through proves it's fresh.

He sighs, his hand gripping my hip, "That was a brother who I saw as an uncle betraying our club. It's not something that will ever touch you or your family because when you are mine, you and your heart become mine, which means your family will become mine. I will never, ever let anything hurt your heart. Just one chance, Spitfire, that's it; just one, and I can promise, one is all I will need."

I swallow hard. I want to, boy, do I want to, but I'm not selfish enough to put my family at risk. I'm about to say this when a voice comes our way, a voice I know oh so well, and I sigh, dropping my head a little, my forehead hitting Hunter's chest as he laughs silently.

My daughter would be honored to go on a date with you. My husband and I are taking her sister to New York for a few days tonight, so it's the perfect time for Sarah to live a little and have something for herself.

I lean around Hunter, causing him to drop the hand on my cheek, his other hand still gripping my hip. I look toward my mother, who sends me a grateful smile. I'd managed to get Mary an appointment with a specialist, hoping they could give us some different news so we wouldn't lose my little sister; it's more for my mother than anything. I think Mary, Dad, and I have understood that she won't beat it this time, but Momma hasn't. I ended up selling all my jewelry, including the gold chain my parents bought me when I turned sixteen, just to afford the appointment and airline tickets.

"Momma…" I started, but she smirked at me as Hunter turned around, smiling wide at Momma for being by his side. She shakes her head and says, "Nope. It's time you put yourself first. Snake, it's good to see you, darling."

My mouth dropped open in shock while he smiled and walked over to my Momma, kissing her cheek after squeezing my hip. "It's good to see you too, Mrs. Reynolds."

I tilt my head and ask, "Uh, how exactly do you two know each other?"

My Momma smiles wide. "Snake here drops off the food for the food bank most months, sweetheart; did I not tell you?"

I narrowed my eyes because, no, she did not. The sneaky, meddling little...

She grins back, "So it's settled. Snake, you can pick Sarah up tonight at six; she'll be ready. You remember where we live, right?"

Hunter chuckles but nods, his eyes twinkling, before walking over to me. He bends down and kisses my cheek, right near the corner of my mouth, sending shivers down my spine before he rasps, "Be ready, Spitfire. You and I will be happening; even your Momma agrees."

With a wink, he turns and leaves the office, heading to his bike. The blue tank shines as he climbs on, the devil teasing me. I swallow hard as he looks my way again with a smirk before slowly backing his bike out of the garage and starting her up. The pipes vibrate through the glass walls, causing goosebumps on my arms. I watch as he drives away before making eye contact with Momma, who's grinning widely.

I'm at a loss for words; honestly, I have no idea what to say regarding Hunter. He says he wants me, but the problem is, will he be okay coming second to my ill sister?

I clear my throat. The only words I can muster are, "Did, uh, did you know Uncle Peter now goes by Spider?"

He's not really my uncle; he's just someone our family was extremely close to before Grandpa died. I thought he moved away because of the pain of losing someone he loved. It turns out I was right; he went on the road, never staying in one place.

Momma's eyes saddened, but she nodded. "You know your grandpa was the love of his life, sweetheart; he just couldn't live without him, so he decided to live for him."

I give a small smile because I know she's right; I was their flower girl when they married. I guess it's just hard; when we lost Grandpa, we lost Uncle P as well.

Momma gave me a sad smile before her eyes brightened, "So, what are you going to wear on your date tonight?"

And with that, I groan because I have no flipping clue, especially when my last actual date was when I was seventeen.

Damn, I'm screwed!
