Olivia – Six Months Later

I sigh as I wipe down another table. I’ve been at work since five this morning, and now I have to close this evening because Florence just had to go on an errand at lunchtime. She told me she’d be back by two so I could leave and, surprise-surprise, she didn’t show. I can’t even call her grandmother because she’s away this week.

I need to find a new job or look into selling cakes from Mom’s apartment until I can have my own bakery.

I shake my head, grateful April’s with Phil today.

I pick up the dirty plates from the table next to me, placing them in the bucket on the counter, before going over to wipe that table down. I just finish when the door opens.

I call out, “Sorry, but we’re closed,” before I look to see who’s walked in, only to narrow my eyes.

Smokey’s ex-wife.

Her blue eyes look me up and down, and she states, smiling sweetly, “You’re looking a little bit of a mess, sweetheart.”

Can I hit her?

I shake my head. “Thanks, but again, we’re closed.”

She sighs dramatically, placing her left hand on her chest. The white gold square diamond ring shines in the bakery’s light, and I furrow my brows.

She sees where my attention is before grinning. “Oh yes, this old thing. It belonged to my man’s momma, Rose. He gave it back to me last night. Isn’t it great?”

I blink, then blink again. Last night? The night when he sat in my mom’s kitchen nook, where he had sat every night for the past six months until ten at night, when he left kissing my head and stating, “You’ll give in to me soon, Freckles.”

I clear my throat. “Really? It must have been romantic.”

She blinks, taken aback that I’ve not run off crying. She shrugs. “Uh, yes, it was. He, uh, spent the whole afternoon with me.”

Bingo. I bite my lip to stop my snort as she continues, “He spread rose petals all over my apartment. it was perfect.”

I nod, ready to burst crazy’s bubble, and I tilt my head. “Funny, because he was at mine until late last night.” Her eyes widen before her cheeks heat with anger and embarrassment, and I give her a smirk, and state, “Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.”

Her breathing gets heavier as she steps forward, but I just raise a brow, hoping she does something so I can claim self-defense.

Unfortunately for me, she stops before she sneers, “So you finally figured out I was lying, huh? After two years? You’re not very smart, are you, sweetheart? I mean, clearly, you’re not smart because you’re still not with him.”

I tilt my chin defiantly. “I’m not with him because I don’t deserve him.”

She snorts. “What a fucking martyr.”

I just shrug. Maybe I am, but I believed he could be a cheater; I thought he could use me to get this woman back despite being with him for five months, despite knowing him and who he is as a person.

I know he hurt me; believe me, I do. I made him suffer for it, but once my girl forgave him, I did, too.

I shrug. “I don’t care what you think, but what I do care about is you being in here when we’re closed, so turn your plastic ass with your ugly, fake diamond around and leave before I call the cops.”

She narrows her eyes, but I just raise a brow as she sneers, “He’ll be mine again soon enough.” She stomps away, slamming the door on her way out. I just shrug before going back to cleaning because, somehow, I doubt he will be hers.

The woman’s a loon.

Maybe she and Harris can get together; they’d be the perfect couple. Or perhaps the worst, depending on how you look at it. I got a restraining order against him after the hospital incident. The nerve of that idiot calling my girl his daughter. I think he’s not all there, to be honest. After looking her up, I spoke to his ex, who is not named Avril, but the ten-year-old girl who also happens to be his daughter or who he thought was his daughter, with whom he is not allowed contact with is named Avril. His ex, Patricia, moved away after he got too controlling when he’d found out she apparently cheated on him. A judge sided with her because paternity proved he was not the father.

He’s never really recovered.

In a way, I felt bad for him, until she told me he mentally abused her after only a few dates, and that they weren’t really in a relationship, and there was no way he could be the father because she hadn’t slept with him, and the girl was the result of a one-off mistake with a visiting biker whom she has now started a relationship with.

They’ve got another baby on the way and she’s happy.
