“Why?” I turned to look at Millie, knowing my eyes were puffy. Sleep was not something I did much of last night.

“I think you’re going to get all your questions answered really soon.”

I could only stare at her. What kind of answers did she mean?

An hour later, Millie was still acting absent, so I answered the door when it rang and found two women, one with black hair, the other with red hair, on the other side. “Hi, gals.”

“Hi . . .” Becca said, a frown wrinkling her brow.

I gave them a brief smile. “I’m Lira. Come on in.”

“Lira, it’s really nice to meet you. I’m Jill, and this is Becca. When did you get back from your travels?” the woman with black hair asked.

“A while ago. Just in time to help Millie with the latest gallery showing.”

“Oh,” Jill said, looking over at Becca.

“I wonder . . .” Becca said.

“It’s too much of a coincidence,” Jill said.

“But it would explain a lot,” Becca said.

“What in the world are you two mumbling about over there?” Millie said, now walking to the sofa. “Please, take a seat. What was so important you had to make a trip to tell me in person?”

Jill and Becca seated themselves in the armchairs while I stayed at the breakfast table. It didn’t escape my notice that Millie was sitting as far from them as possible on the couch.

“How are you doing, Millie?” Jill said.

“How am I doing?” Millie looked over at me, and I just stared back at her. I had no idea what was going on, but I wasn’t going anywhere, not when my sister needed me. She turned back to face them and said flatly, “I’m assuming you two are here because of what happened yesterday. Given what I saw, I don’t know how I could possibly be doing well.”

“Yeah, it was a surprise to me too,” Becca said. “I ran screaming the first time I saw them in their wolf form.”

I got up and sat next to Millie. “Wolf form?” I asked, excitement taking ahold of me. “Were people dressed up prematurely for Halloween? Did I miss an epic costume party?”

“No, nothing of the sort,” Millie said.

Jill and Becca shifted in their seats. “Lira doesn’t know?” Becca asked.

“No,” Millie said, and I hoped she wouldn’t ask me to leave.

“What have you not told me?” I asked her, even as I turned to look at Jill and Becca. “Millie has refused to tell me anything. She’s just been moping around the house for the last twelve hours. It’s really worrying me. Do you two know what happened to her yesterday?”

Jill and Becca nodded but kept their eyes on Millie.

“I think we should talk to Millie in private,” Jill said.

“No!” Millie cried. “If there’s something to be said, Lira stays in the room. She needs to know, especially because of who she’s dating.”

“What do you mean?” Becca asked, this time looking at me with a guarded look.

“Lira has been dating Bruno.”

“Oh!” Jill said, clapping her hand to her mouth.

“Oh boy,” Becca said. “That explains how the boys never knew you were twins. Jill and I have been trying to figure it out this whole time.”

“What do you mean?” I asked. I wracked my brain through the conversations Bruno and I had held. We had talked about our siblings, but I’d avoided telling him Millie and I were twins. Was he going to find out that I had been pretending to be Millie?
