Trixie’s eyes had gotten big. “I’ve never met a shifter before.”

“Wolf shifter. And how do you know that?”

“You’re like Miti! Your eyes turned golden.”

“Everyone knows Miti,” I said with a laugh, and immediately realized I needed to watch my emotions better here.

“True,” Trixie said with a smile. “She is one of the most respected witches ever and who is also a wolf shifter.”

I smiled at the pride Trixie was exuding. Miti was a force to be reckoned with, and I loved her dearly. It was nice to see others respected her as well.

“You must be one of her family members then,” Trixie surmised.

I nodded. “I’m one of her grandsons.”

“Would you know if the rumors are true? That witches have sided with wolf shifters?”

“We’ll have to go to the meeting to find out.” This wasn’t a question I wanted to answer now. At the nagging from my wolf, I asked, “Do you know if Lira is at her house now?”

“Probably. I can usually spot when people are in town, but the mansion is cloaked. Always has been. No one can feel anything through its walls.”

Thank goodness for that. Lira should have privacy wherever she was living. “And where would this mansion be?”

She studied me for a minute, and I stood taller, showing my full height. We stood like that, eyeing each other until she relented. “I might regret this, but I can’t detect any menace from you.”

“I’m a good friend of Lira’s. I’ve been worried about her because she won’t return her sister’s or friends’ calls.”

Her head cocked the other way, eyes narrowing. I was starting to get impatient. I was so close to finding Lira, and yet she was still unattainable. Then, with relief, Trixie pointed to her right.

“It’s just down this road toward the water. The trees in front of the gate are overgrown, so it’s even more hidden than it already was, but just stay on the path and you’ll . . . Well, you’ll see it when you see it. It’s hard to explain if you don’t know what to look for.”

“Why don’t you just tell me?”

A twinkle was in her eyes. “Nah, it’ll be more fun for you to find out. But I’ll be here if you can’t figure it out.”

I wanted to growl, but she had helped me in the end—that’s if she was telling me the truth. “Thanks.”

I turned to start walking down the path when Trixie called after me, “Tell Lira I really want to see her again.”

I waved to acknowledge I’d heard her. I’d do that, but first, I had to make sure she was safe.

Miti

“Bubbie, you must remember! It’s crucial to our plans.”

“Nothing good will come of it. Please stop asking!” Bubbie said, turning her back on me and churning the pot even harder than necessary.

“You’ll come with me tomorrow then?” I asked her.

“To the coven meeting?”

“Yes.”

Her shoulders tensed. “No.”

“Why not?!”

“Because my witching days are done. I’m not even a real witch anyways, just a pretend one who was really good at chemistry.”
