“Yes, it’s quite annoying when you do that. You’re always leaving me hanging without an explanation.”

“That’s because I get sudden visions or strange things happening when I really want something. It’s disconcerting, and the only way I know how to deal with it is to hide myself away.”

“Lira.” Millie’s voice was a whisper.

“These visions started becoming more insistent in the last year. I didn’t know how to deal with them.”

“Were they about the future?” she asked quietly.

“Sometimes, but not all the time.” Should I tell her about when I asked her to take over for me when selling Dad’s art? She would be so mad at me.

“What is it, Lira? I can hear your thoughts forming in your head.”

I sighed. “You’re going to be so mad at me.”

“When has that ever stopped me from loving you?”

“You love me?”

“Of course, I do!” she replied sharply. “Why would you think I didn’t?”

“I’m the Lira Factor. I just . . .”

“Lira, I love you. I’ll always love you. You’re my twin sister. You drive me bonkers a lot of the times, but no one understands me better than you.”

Something eased inside my chest. “Same to you, Millie.”

“Okay, now that we have that out of the way, what were you going to say that is going to make me so mad at you?”

“Okay. Do you remember when I last asked you to take over selling Dad’s art?”

“Yup, I remember trudging through the snow every day to get to the gallery and having to give up my vacation days for you.”

“Yeah.” I closed my eyes and hummed the same little tune I always did when I got nervous.

“Lira, I promise I won’t yell.”

I stopped humming and took a couple of deep breaths. Millie was always there for me when I needed her. “The day I asked you to come and fill in for me was a day I had a vision. It happened that very afternoon in the gallery bathroom.”

“How did you get through that?”

“Just barely. Lillian was so busy with other customers that I didn’t think she noticed, but then she showed up in the bathroom and gave me something to drink that made my stomach a lot calmer. I felt so much better after that that I told her my secret, along with the visions I was having. She told me to go home right away and to call you to come take my place.”

“You just told her? A total stranger! And she just accepted?” Millie yelled down the phone.

“You said you wouldn’t yell,” I reminded her.

I heard deep breathing coming through the phone, then Millie said a lot more calmly this time, “Yes, sorry. It’s just that I can’t believe you kept this from me but others knew.”

“I’m sorry, Millie. I should have trusted you to have my back.”

She made a noise in agreement. “And Lillian believed you?”

“She did, because she’s a witch too.”

“What? What are the chances of that happening?” Millie exclaimed. “What was in your vision?”

“Bruno. But I didn’t know who he was at the time.”
