Luc stood up and started walking toward the door. “I’m going to double the sentries’ training these next two days.”

“I’ll come help,” Brandon said, standing up. Jacob did too.

“You should go as well,” I said to Bruno.

“No, I’ll stay with you,” he said.

“I’ll be fine. I’m going to go with Millie and the girls and hang out with them some.”

“She’s going to come with me, actually,” Miti said. “Bubbie must train her for what’s to come. Trixie, Mod, and Piya are here. They can help the girls with the potions as well.”

With that said, Miti stood up and waited for me to join her. Once I was next to her, she put her hand on my heart, and I felt a warmth seep in.

“The other spirits did the same thing. What does it mean?” I asked.

“We transferred some of our essence to you. When you need help, all you have to do is focus on your heart and call for us, and we will come to your aid.”

“Oh . . . You would do that for me?”

“Always, dear girl. You are part of this family now. And your ancestors have waited a long time for you. Of course, they would give you a piece of themselves willingly.”

I felt tears forming in my eyes, and I wiped them away before they had time to fall. “I’m ready to see Bubbie now.”

“And she’s ready to see you.”

Lira

“Having the flower in your heart magnifies your power manyfold,” Bubbie said. “But it can also dwindle your heart till you can’t feel love like you once could. The more you use its power, the more it will either strengthen or weaken your heart.”

“Did it dwindle yours?”

“A lot.” She looked so sad when she said this.

“But you can feel love now. I see the way you look at your family.”

“I do love my family, but it has taken a lot of time to rebuild my desire to be in this world.”

I felt my stomach drop. “You wanted to leave your family?”

“I wanted my life to quiet down and for others to leave me alone. It is not a way to live, Lira.”

“What do I do?” I said, a feeling of hopelessness making its way into my heart.

“You have to hope.”

“Hope?” This sounded very familiar to what Lillian had said to me.

“Yes. You must hope for the best outcome. Hope that tomorrow will be a better day and then keep that hope alive in your heart. The flower magnifies whatever feelings you have. Mine became despair over the many years I was with my husband’s pack. He abused the power I shared with him, and I could not take it back. This means once you share its power with someone, it’s theirs to use forever. They cannot share it with others, but my husband made me share it with his whole pack. They were undefeated for many years and ruined many families.”

“But if I have hope?”

“If you magnify hope instead, your power will be a lot happier than mine was. Do good deeds with it. Knowing you are with my grandson gives me hope that you will use it for good. But be wise on who you share this power with.”

Sobered, I whispered, “It’s a lot of responsibility.”

“Yes, and not one we chose for ourselves.”

“I’m not known for being responsible,” I shared, wanting there to be no illusions as to who I was.
