I open my mouth to strongly disagree, but he shoves me backward and stands, pulling me to his side with an iron grip.

“No!”

I pull back and catch the eye of the bartender, who pointedly looks away.

Before I can scream, the creep rams his hand over my mouth and pulls me toward a door behind the bar, the shadows doing a very good job of disguising our movements.

I try so hard to struggle, to bite down on his hand that reeks of smoke, but he is too strong for me and as we crash through the door, he spins me around, so my back is against the wall.

As he stares deep into my eyes, his hand covers my mouth and he growls, “Relax, soon you won’t feel a thing.”

My eyes widen as he rummages in his pocket and pulls out a syringe and as he raises it, I’m almost convinced it’s game over.

Suddenly, the lights go out and a muffled bang shatters the darkness. I attempt to scream, but nothing comes out as my assailant falls against me with an angry curse.

His hand is pressed hard against my neck, making it difficult to breathe, and the sound of footsteps echoing along the corridor is beating in time to my heart.

It happens so quickly the man doesn’t even have time to recover before he is pulled off me and slammed against the wall.

His muffled groan is the only sound I hear as whoever this is strikes him several times. I am freaking terrified as the guy beside me is hammered to the wall, his grunts of pain strangely soothing as his attacker deals with him in a brutal way.

I am so terrified it takes me a moment to gather my thoughts before I push off from the wall and make to run for it.

I don’t get far.

A strong hand reaches out and grabs my wrist as he uses his other one to crash into my assailant’s head, causing him to fall to the floor in a crumpled heap.

Then a strong voice whispers huskily, “We will walk back through that bar and not look back. When we get outside, there will be a car waiting. Step inside and the driver will take you home. Do not come here again.”

It’s so dark I can only make out a huge shadow and, according to that, he must be well over six feet tall and probably just as wide. His voice has an accent that I can’t place and yet there is a kindness to it that reassures he means me no harm.

So, I take a deep breath and whisper, “Okay.”

“Good girl.”

His soft, husky voice sends shivers down my spine because it’s the voice of an angel in my scrambled mind.

He saved me.

This man probably saved my life, and I don’t even know what he looks like.

We leave the still body of a man I never want to think of again, let alone see, and as we step into the bar, he closes the door softly behind him.

I swallow hard as the light dances around us and the woman on the stage stands in nothing but a silver thong as her body wraps around the pole, accompanied by a soft hush in the building.

I walk beside my rescuer and as we move past the tables, I try desperately to catch a glimpse of his face.

All I can see is a dark shape dressed completely in black and large enough to block out the light.

Who is he?

We spill out onto the sidewalk, and he steps to the side as a black car waits on the curb, its door open.

He gently pushes me forward and whispers, “Don’t look back.”

My knees shake and my heart is close to cardiac arrest as I step inside the empty car and, as the door slams, it takes off before I can even fasten my seatbelt. As I look back, the only thing I see is the glow of a cigarette as the man watches me go.
