“I’ll bear that in mind.” I wink as I head to the restroom to clean up, trying hard to push down the usual self-loathing that comes in the aftermath of a dirty fuck.

The trouble is, that is all I deserve, all I want because women like Melissa don’t deserve what being with a man like me involves. She deserves better and despite wanting to enjoy a dirty adventure, she is not getting it from me.

CHAPTER 16

MELISSA

This isn’t one of Apollo’s best ideas and I’m wondering where the hell he is. It must be ten minutes after he disappeared when one of the guys from a group by the door heads my way and takes his seat.

“That seat is taken.” I say breathlessly and he shrugs, staring at me through bloodshot eyes. His hair is short, and his mean eyes hide a million bad deeds, and his sallow skin tells me he doesn’t get out in the sunlight much.

“It is now.” He grins, his eyes traveling the length of me, and his whiskey breath invades my personal space as he leans in.

His hand lands on my knee and I shift away, glancing at the door Apollo disappeared through, praying for a miracle that he returns immediately.

“My truck is out the back.”

“That’s nice.”

I make to stand, intent on following Apollo and he sticks out his foot, and it causes me to trip and before I can recover, his arms grab me into a tight hold.

“Let go of me.” I catch the bartender’s eye and like the one before at Dark Shadows, he pointedly looks away. Fuck this shit.

I open my mouth to scream the place down and his rank hand presses against my mouth, and he whispers, “I like them unwilling and nobody here will help you.”

“Wrong!”

I sag with relief when the guy is pulled away from me with one angry move and Apollo’s fist cracks against his skull, the blood flying in an arc onto the bar.

I move swiftly away and watch in horror as Apollo slams the guy’s head on the bar repeatedly with one hand and stares around the room, challenging anyone to interfere.

I can’t look away as he completely rearranges the bastard’s face and then drops him to his knees and kicks him square in the groin.

The man’s screams echo around the bar but the band, to their credit, carry on playing and it’s as if I’m suspended in time as Apollo grips my hand and pulls me away from the man on the floor and through the gawping crowd, who quickly glance away as he catches their eye.

We spill out into the cool crisp night and Apollo wastes no time in heading over to his bike, growling, “Jump on baby, I believe we’ve overstayed our welcome.”

I don’t need to be told twice and as the bike fires up, I can’t get away from this place quickly enough.

For the entire ride back, I replay the scene in my mind and feel sick. What am I thinking? This isn’t me. I’m putting myself in immeasurable danger just for a kick or three with a man I should avoid like the plague. The trouble is, I don’t want to—avoid him, that is. I want a man like Apollo in my life because he is like a rare endangered species, and I have never met anyone like him before.

I could howl when he pulls up outside the gates less than two hours after I left them and cuts the engine and rips off his helmet.

He runs his fingers through his hair and in the dusky light, I detect a hint of vulnerability that makes me catch my breath.

“I’m sorry baby.” He says huskily, pulling me toward him and resting his lips on mine.

“I shouldn’t have taken you there. It won’t happen again.”

“It’s okay.” I reassure him even though I’m not sure it is, and he whispers against my lips, “Let’s get out of town.”

“Where?” My heart is banging as he says huskily, “Somewhere hot and tropical.”

“Really?” My eyes light up because the thought of an illicit vacation with this god isn’t something I’m going to say no to anytime soon, and I nod shyly. “We have a house in Barbados. When are you thinking?”

“Tomorrow.” His tongue edges inside my mouth and as it wraps around mine, I taste beer and wicked intent.

He kisses me deeply, and it’s as if I’m on fire inside and when he pulls back, I want to weep with frustration.
