“Yes, Shade is taking care of things for us and I’m repaying the favor.”

“What have you told her?” He says, mildly curious, and I shrug.

“That we’re taking a short vacation. She thinks it’s Barbados, although that name came from her lips, not mine.”

“How do you think she’ll react when you leave her there?”

I’m feeling bad enough and really don’t need to dwell on Melissa’s rude awakening and I ignore his question and say with a deep growl, “We must work out what to do when the intel comes our way. This could be our only chance to end this shit and we can’t leave anything to chance.”

He stretches and chucks me another can from the pack by his side.

“I’m heading home when this job finishes. Dad wants to run through it, so I’m guessing you’ll receive the call soon.”

“I was thinking along the same lines. It will be good to spend some time at home. All this traveling is severely testing my mental health.”

He laughs out loud. “You don’t have any; you were fucked at birth.”

“We both were.” I remind him and say with curiosity, “Do you feel bad about Laura?”

He shrugs. “She’s a Vieri. They are born evil, and she will soon discover she also has that power. She’s a nice girl, though. Caught between hell and a hard place.”

“You like her?”

“I do, although not in the way you’re thinking.”

“Tell me something new.”

I fix him with a quizzical gaze. “Do you ever wish you found someone, Adonis? I’ve never known you to be keen on anyone.”

He closes his eyes and I watch his fists ball and then release along with his breath.

“I’m still searching, and the reason for that is probably because I’m always looking in the wrong places.”

It makes me laugh out loud. “I can’t argue with that.”

I hate the concern that sparks in his eyes as he stares at me, and I hold up my hand.

“I don’t want to talk about it.”

“You never do, but–”

“Adonis.” I warn and, as always, he goes there anyway.

“What will you do if you find her?”

I close my eyes and try to blink away the image of the woman I never stopped loving.

She is always here, standing center stage in my emotions. Her sweet, angelic face, with baby blue eyes and long white-blonde hair. She was an angel in hell, and I never could resist her. Even when we were kids, I was always fascinated by her.

I blink away the memory because it’s far too painful and sigh heavily.

“I will know if that happens, but right now, I need to sleep. Tomorrow is going to be a bitch of a day and I’m not feeling very good about myself right now.”

Adonis watches me with a hooded expression as I stand, yawning loudly as if a prove a point to myself as well as him.

“Night, bro. See you at home, if not before.”

As I make my way to my room, I hope tomorrow goes without a hitch. I wasn’t kidding when I told my brother I felt bad. I do. Melissa is one of the sweetest, prettiest girls I have ever met and there is a part of me that wonders if she is the one I have been searching for and if living in the past has blinded me to my future.
