She moves back to her sun bed, and I turn on my back and forego my shades and I swear my body reacts to every movement or gesture she makes.

She lies back and lifts her right leg before placing it back down and I turn on my side and watch her through predatory eyes. I say nothing and just stare, absorbing every minute detail of her and she is obviously uncomfortable because she says slightly breathlessly, “Um, tell me about this place.”

“It’s our home.” I’m being devilishly uncooperative, and she stumbles over her words.

“Do you live here all the time?”

“No.”

I continue to stare, and she turns and rolls her eyes. “You don’t like conversation.”

“What makes you say that?” I grin and despite herself, she giggles softly.

I take pity on her and say huskily, “This is our main home, but we also have a vineyard in Provence and a ski chalet in Saint Moritz. We have an olive processing plant nearby, and the business takes up most of our time.”

Her eyes widen. “I’m surprised. I thought–”

She checks herself and I shrug, continuing to stare deep into her eyes.

“We also have another business. The one that brought you here. We are contract killers, assassins if you like, but we are not mafia.”

“I thought…”

“That we are. In the past definitely, but my father decided to enjoy his retirement and both Apollo and I weren’t too interested in becoming mafia dons in his place.”

“Was that hard to do? Give it up, I mean.”

She glances around and smiles. “There are no guards, not like the Vieris enjoy.”

“Because nobody would even think of coming here because our reputation is a violent one.”

I don’t sugar coat my words because Melissa needs to understand the men we are, and she nods. “I suppose.”

She props herself up on one arm and adopts the same pose as me and we are now staring into one another’s eyes, with only a few inches of air between us.

“So, what happens when you come home?”

Her lashes dust against her cheeks and I swear I have never wanted any woman as much as her and I say softly, “I’ll show you.”

“Show me?”

Excitement lights her eyes and I nod. “This afternoon I’ll take you riding. We will explore the property and I’ll show you first hand why I love it here.”

“Riding.” Her eyes light up. “I would love that.”

“Me too.” I smirk because the riding I intend on doing has nothing to do with a horse, not if I have my way. However, for now, the four-legged variety will help my plan nicely.

Maria, our housekeeper, appears with a pitcher of cool water and some fruit and sets it down between us on the small table.

I don’t miss the twinkle in her eyes when Melissa smiles sweetly. “Thank you so much. You are very kind.”

She sits up and I feast my eyes on her slender waist as she reaches for the jug and smiles at me. “Would you like some?”

I swear my heart rate doubles as I picture what I really want, and yet I nod coolly.

“Of course.”

As she pours the water, her hand shakes a little and some of the liquid spills onto her skin. As she offers the glass to me, I take it and watch as she does the same for herself.
