He leaves me to it and as I gather my things, my heart is racing. I can’t believe this is happening. It makes me think about what I want. Could I be with a man like him? A cold-hearted killer so far removed from my life, it’s as if we’re on opposite planets. Can I give my heart to a man who probably doesn’t have one and can I really dive into something with a man like him?

One hour later and there’s a gentle knock on my door and I take a deep breath and open it.

Adonis is dressed in jeans and a tight t-shirt and is staring at me as if he wants to eat me whole.

“Are you ready?” He drags his eyes the length of me, and I am ashamed to admit that I wore my tightest t-shirt and jeans for the occasion. My hair is pulled back into an aptly named ponytail and I have my sneakers on in the place of riding boots.

“I think so.” My breath hitches as he nods, a lazy appreciative smile on his face.

“Come.”

My heart melts when he reaches for my hand and, as his large one closes around mine, it’s the most natural thing in the world.

We head outside and walk down a small track where bushes frame the path and as we turn the corner, I notice two horses waiting patiently, being held by a groomsman.

I beam with delight at the pretty white horse wearing a smart black leather saddle and then squeal as Adonis wraps his arms around my waist and gives me a helping hand. As I sit astride the horse, I check my breathing because every time he touches me, I melt inside.

I watch as he swings his leg over a beautiful black horse whose coat gleams in the fading rays of the sun, and as the groomsman steps back, Adonis grins.

“Please tell me you can ride.”

“Of course.” I grin back at him. “We have stables at home.”

“Of course you do.” He rolls his eyes and turns his horse toward the path leading to the trees in the distance and, taking a deep breath, I pat my horse and follow him.

CHAPTER 40

ADONIS

Apollo is pissed at me, and dad isn’t too pleased either. I was called away to meet with them both and state my intentions toward Melissa.

Apollo has some weird protective shit going on for her. I’m not sure why, but he insists that she’s not a common whore to hit on while she’s here, which I took offense to. Of course, she’s no whore. I never believed for a second she was and I found it difficult to explain my sudden fascination with her.

Dad was quiet and took it all in before he intervened and told Apollo he had more important things on his mind and warned me about overstepping the line with our guest.

I saw the thoughtful gleam in his eye as he watched me leave the room, and I understand why. I never show an interest in any woman. It’s not what I do. I fuck whores and the odd woman I meet in a bar who fancies a walk on the wild side. But never twice. Chloe is different. She’s convenient and if that makes me a bastard, then you’d be right. I am. But not with her. Not with Melissa and I can’t even explain my infatuation to myself, let alone my family.

So, I have decided to get to know her and see what lies behind the shy smile and sparkling eyes. That was the reason for invading her space at the pool earlier.

The trouble is, she looked so damn sexy shivering in the bikini I couldn’t help myself.

Now we get to spend the next couple of hours riding and as she sits beside me as we move down the path, it strikes me how nice this is.

“I can see why you wanted to get home, Adonis. This life could get addictive.” She says in wonder.

“It is.” I point to the trees looming up before us.

“We are heading through the olive groves. My family makes olive oil and export it. They have done for several generations, and my father oversees the operation.”

“I like your father. You know…” She cocks her head adorably as she glances sideways at me.

“He told me to watch out for you.”

“Then he was right.”

Her short gasp makes me smile and I smirk. “I am interested in you, and he is surprised about that.”

“Thanks.” She laughs softly. “I’m not that bad, surely.”
