“You are extremely intense, Adonis.”
“I know.”
I roll to my side and drag her head to my chest, locking my fingers around her waist, loving the friction of her skin on mine.
“What about you?” She asks, lifting her eyes to mine.
“What about the women in your life? There must have been someone who melted that black heart of yours.”
“No.”
“Do you expect me to believe that?” She appears astonished, and I shrug.
“I told you. I fuck I leave. I’ve done it a lot, by the way.”
“Gross.” She grins to prove she’s teasing and then says shyly, “I don’t usually, um, well, do this type of thing.”
“Tell me why you decided to step outside your safe world, starting with my brother.”
I need to learn what happened between them. Not that it would change how I feel about her. I’m just curious.
“He saved me from a guy who wanted to drug me and apparently sell me on.”
I already know the story because Apollo told me. I also remember the satisfaction of watching his body fly off the cliff and I say gruffly, “Apollo told me.”
“He did?” She sighs. “It was the most frightening and yet the most exciting experience of my life and like an addict I wanted my next fix, so I returned the next night.”
“For Apollo?”
“Yes.” She stares me straight in the eye and I respect that about her. She’s not trying to make excuses and telling me how it was.
“I was fascinated by him. He was so different from any man I had ever met before. I’ve never been attracted to smooth businessmen in suits. Frat boys who live off daddy’s allowance aren’t really my thing.”
“And cold-hearted killers are? You’re a strange woman, Melissa Remington.”
I chuckle softly and to my surprise, she reaches up and trails her fingers down my face and whispers, “You really are a beautiful man, Adonis. I thought Apollo was, but he is nothing like you.”
I say nothing. Her comparison to my brother isn’t a new thing. Many guys would be angry knowing their brother had been there before them. It matters shit to me. I’m here now and I went further than he ever did. She is mine now and he will back off. He already has because he is damaged in a far more brutal way than me. I lost my mom. That was the worst thing that happened in my life, but Apollo lost the two women he loved, which made me determined never to put myself in the same position.
This isn’t love with Melissa. How can it be? I hardly know her. It’s lust on a huge scale and I’m dealing with what that means for my heart.
CHAPTER 43
MELISSA
Ilove this. Lying here on the bank of a river having been fucked senseless by a man who makes my heart scream with pleasure. I couldn’t have said no if I tried. A thousand, no, a million yes’ came before it; I couldn’t deny my body the ultimate pleasure and boy, was it worth the shame I will probably experience in the morning.
I will always have this memory.
No matter what happens next, there was the moment I discovered what all the fuss is about. The perfect lover. The perfect man and the perfect setting. Money can’t buy what happened here today, and that’s what makes it even more special.
I gaze into his eyes and love how beautiful the man is. He has classic features that are breath-taking strokes of God’s genius. A myriad of emotions swirl in his dark eyes and I am fascinated by him. I wasn’t kidding when I said he was intense. He is probably the most intense man I have ever met, including his brother. Adonis has a dark confidence that tells me I’m safe with him, which is a fucking joke when he could end my life and not even think twice about it.
He says he has no emotion. I disagree. I have never seen more emotion in anyone than I do him, especially when he regards me through those dark stormy eyes that are laden with lustful intent. He is magnificent and I could stare at him forever and never grow tired of the view.
If this is what Aphrodite saw when she gazed at Adonis, I fully understand her frustration. To possess the heart of such a man would be a gift from the gods for sure, and I wonder if that can ever be me.
I fuck them and leave.
