I wouldn’t change a thing and I don’t know how on earth I’m supposed to deal with life after Adonis?

After this.

He pulls out and once again tosses the condom into the dirt and I say with amusement, “I wonder if a flower will grow like the myth.”

He shakes his head and, to my surprise, laughs. A deep rumble of pleasure that makes me smile.

I turn and look down at him and dip my head to one side. “I should hate you so much for what you said. Why don’t I?”

“Because you know I’m right.” He shrugs. “I state the facts and sometimes words hurt for a reason.”

He lies his tattooed hand against my face and says huskily, “You can hate what I say, but it doesn’t change a thing. I will never understand why your father left you. I would fight for you until I die.”

For some reason, his words bring tears to my eyes, and he wipes them away with his rough fingers in a gentle act that causes even more to spill.

“Why are you crying, little one?” He whispers softly and I bite my lip and then say huskily. “Because nobody has ever made me feel like this.”

He pulls me toward him and kisses me softly, a lingering kiss that dances across my lips like the flutter of an angel’s wings. It’s a magical moment where sex is forgotten and something sweeter takes its place. Almost affection. Almost love.

His fingers tangle in my hair and he pulls back and whispers, “Aphrodite has nothing on you, Melissa. You are beautiful.”

I don’t know how much more my fragile heart can take as I fall deeper under his spell and as the horses whinny in the clearing, he smiles.

“Come. We should head back and shower before dinner.”

I nod, but I’m disappointed. The magic spell has been broken by reality breaking the bond and as we dress and retrieve our horses, I hate the sinking feeling inside me.

He fucks, he leaves.

He told me so. He won’t promise we will do this again, and I signed up for that. The dream is over, and reality is looming.

We head off at an even gallop and I glance back at a place that will always hold my most treasured memory. Now I must deal with what that means for my heart.

CHAPTER 44

ADONIS

Apollo is pissed and my father thoughtful. They won’t say anything though, because Melissa is a guest at our table and it’s unusual for a female to be present. It’s been the three of us for too many years now and only Phoebe broke the routine. But for the last two years, there has been a vacancy at the table and now Melissa is here in her place.

She looks radiant tonight, and my family knows why. She is positively blooming, and I have never seen a more beautiful woman. The shy glances she throws in my direction don’t go unnoticed, especially when her face blushes a gentle shade of pink.

Her blonde curls are loose and freshly washed, and she is wearing a simple white cotton sundress. She is a natural beauty and really doesn’t need the make-up she has applied, but it accentuates a face that would grace a thousand cosmetics campaigns.

She is mine.

I’ve known that since the moment I met her but pushed it aside as one of life’s tricks.

When I rubbed sunscreen into her skin, something told me she was home and when I slid inside her body, it was like coming home. The fact I felt anything at all was interesting and when she walked away from me to shower and change, it was as if I lost a part of me.

I’m intrigued but not convinced that I’m merely infatuated with her. It will pass the more time we spend together and it’s probably because we are here.

It’s home. My home and a woman being here is a special occasion. I can try to convince myself to the contrary, but I have never reacted to any woman before as I have to her.

Apollo leans in and whispers something in her ear that makes her giggle, and I hate my brother with a passion for that.

I catch my father’s eye and he sighs before saying to Melissa, “Please forgive my sons for two flights to places you weren’t expecting.”

She smiles at him warmly. “It was surprising, but I’m glad I came. Serenita was amazing and being here, in your home, is well–” She smiles dreamily. “A home from home. This is a special place; you are very lucky to live here.”
