“Oh, come on… Seriously?” He sighs heavily and palms his forehead. I can see the inner war raging behind his eyes. “You have no one else that will go with you?”

“Everyone I know that would go with me is already going…” I trail off, a hopeful tone tainting my voice. I bite my bottom lip gently, hoping that he’ll agree to go with me.

I watch his jaw twitch as he drums his fingers on the table. He stares me down as if he’s waiting for me to tell him I’m joking. When he realizes that I’m serious, he clears his throat. “I know I said I owed you one, but this seems a little bit like overkill,” he mutters.

“Oh, I already considered us even for that when you let me stay here and helped me move out. This… well, this is just me asking you to come with me.” I can feel my eyes silently pleading with him. My stomach is in knots as I wait for his reply. It’s like I just passed him a note in study hall that asks whether he likes me, and I’m praying that he checks “yes.”

“I’ll make you a deal. If I go to this show with you, you go to a concert of my choosing with me in the future.” His eyes light up with mischief.

I gulp before I respond — I know that our musical tastes are on opposite ends of the spectrum. “Do I even want to know what you’d be subjecting me to?”

“Hmmm, you never know. Could be Avenged Sevenfold, could be Cannibal Corpse. What do you say?”

My lips purse and my mouth shifts side to side in deliberation. Grant would never have even considered accompanying me to this show — hence why I was going with Savannah to begin with.

“Okay, you’ve got a deal.” I smile victoriously.

“I can’t believe you got me to agree to go see that overhyped diva.” He shakes his head, picking his fork back up to finish his dinner.

“Uh, excuse me, she is a lyrical goddess — you’ll see.”

Chapter 16

What the fuck did I do last night? I agreed to go see the most bubblegum of all of Hollywood’s pop stars. But the way Kelsey looked at me like I was the only one in the world who could make her happy — it broke down every wall I could even think about putting up.

I woke up this morning feeling completely wrecked from a lack of sleep — I tossed and turned most of the night thinking about her. I’d wondered if she believed what that idiot had said yesterday about me wanting to fuck her, and then tossing her aside once I did. I don’t ever want her to think that I just want sex from her. She is so much better than that, and I hope she’ll give me a chance to prove that to her.

“What do you normally have for breakfast on work days?” I ask her as I make my way through the kitchen.

She lets out a laugh. “Honestly, I’m usually flying out the door by the seat of my pants, so I usually grab something in the teacher’s lounge at school.”

“Come sit down and have breakfast with me. You have plenty of time.” I pull out a chair for her and tap the table.

“I really don’t, Joey. I need to get to school early to go over some of the papers I didn’t get a chance to grade this weekend.” She looks down with a pang of guilt. “I promise, I’ll get up early and have breakfast with you tomorrow.”

“I’m holding you to that.” I resist the urge to call her “Angel” again. It’s scary to me how easily it’s been ready to roll off my tongue in conversation. “Have a good day.”

“You too.” She grabs her travel mug off of the counter and heads out the door.

I’m in so much fucking trouble with this woman. I want so badly to take that leap of faith and make my move, but I don’t want her to think I’m an asshole preying on a vulnerable woman.

Just as quickly as she left the house, she’s right back inside. “Ummm… My car is making a funny noise.”

“Did you try turning off the Taylor Swift playlist?” I chuckle playfully.

“You’re an asshole, you know that?” She smiles back at me. “Seriously, I tried to start it and it made a really loud clunking noise. Can you take a look?”

“It’s probably your starter. Leave me your keys and I’ll have Frankie come tow it to the shop. Give me five minutes to finish up here and I’ll drop you off.”

“You’re a lifesaver, Joey. Now I kind of feel bad for suckering you into the concert this weekend.”

“For the record, Kelsey — you are the only person I would suffer through that noise for.”

The smile that takes over her face brightens my whole world. “Well, if it’ll help, I’ll get you nice and drunk before the show so at least you won’t remember that you went.”

“I’d never need to be drunk to have a good time with you, even if it means my head possibly exploding from her shrill voice.”

I’m pretty sure I’m chalking this up in my mind to be the worst thing I’ll ever experience. I just keep reminding myself that I’ll gladly take any opportunity I can to spend time with her. And as long as she’s happy while she’s with me, then that’s all that matters.
