“Yeah, once with —” The smile that was there a second ago suddenly disappears. Her face is now rigid and tense.

“What’s wrong?” I grab onto her hand.

Her eyes drift to my right and they ooze with panic. When I look behind me, I see the source — her douchebag ex sitting two tables away with some blonde bimbo.

Chapter 26

“Grant.” His name leaves my mouth through gritted teeth.

I recognize the skank that’s with him at his table — she’s his secretary. The first time I saw her was when I’d decided to come surprise Grant with lunch. She was wearing a skin-tight white button-up blouse and a black pencil skirt that hugged her curves, paired with five-inch stiletto heels. She donned thick-framed glasses and had her hair pinned up. She looked like she’d walked straight out of an office-themed porno. Insecurity coursed through my veins at the thought that this was the woman who would be handling my boyfriend’s day-to-day affairs. I’m now more certain than ever that she was doing more than just bringing him his coffee every morning.

Not that I would ever be stupid enough to take his sorry ass back, but I feel vindicated in my decision to ignore him completely. Clearly, he was full of shit when he said he would change. If he was still as hung up on me and missing me as much as he said he was, he wouldn’t be feeling up his secretary in the middle of a classy steak house.

“Kelsey,” Joey’s voice cuts through my thoughts. I snap my gaze back to him and offer an apologetic nod. “Don’t waste another fucking second worrying about that asshole. Be here with me.” He gives my hand a comforting squeeze. “You know the best revenge against someone who hurt you is being happy.”

My heart sinks a little at the thought of how he must feel right now. We’ve been having a great day together and it came crashing down with one look at my narcissistic ex. “You’re right, I’m sorry. He only has the power to ruin my night if I let him.”

“That’s my girl.” He picks my hand up and kisses it.

We fall back into a comfortable silence while we look over the menu and give our waiter our orders.

“So, how’s the tutoring with Dominic been going?” He’s been checking in here and there throughout the week, but we haven’t had a full discussion about my take on the whole thing.

“It reminds me of tutoring you, to be honest,” I chuckle. “I don’t know that I’m making any progress in helping him understand the material. I’m thinking of asking Daisy if she’d be willing to tutor him — sometimes it’s easier to understand from someone your age than a teacher.”

He frowns at my statement like I’ve said something offensive. “Unless that teacher is you, Angel. You have no idea how much you helped me back then.”

“Which goes to prove my point — we were peers. I wasn’t your teacher.”

“Thank fuck for that. If I were one of your students right now, I’d have a hard time focusing on anything but my raging desire to fuck you.”

I feel the flush creeping up my neck and face at his words. He’s said far dirtier things to me, but something about the way he said it makes my thighs clench together. “Isn’t that a problem you already have?”

“I’d hardly consider it a problem, Kels. I’d spend all day, every day, inside of you if I could.” His voice is sultry and sends a shiver right through me.

“Okay, you can’t say things like that when we’re in public and you can’t do anything to calm the storm, so to speak.”

“Welcome to my life,” he mutters into his drink glass before taking a sip.

“I’ll be right back. I’m going to go freshen up before dinner gets here.” I stand up and start to walk away from the table when Joey grabs my wrist and pulls me closer.

“Don’t you dare touch my pussy, Angel,” he whispers in my ear. “That’s my dessert later.”

I can’t do anything other than whimper and nod in response. This man knows how to make a mess out of me without even touching me. My legs are now wobbly as I try to make my way to the bathroom — it’ll be a miracle if I don’t completely face plant.

After I’ve splashed some cold water on my face and neck, I touch up my makeup and make my way back to the table. Or at least, I try to.

“You’ve been ignoring me.” I hear his voice behind me and my blood runs cold. I turn to see a very pissed-off Grant leaning against the wall with his arms crossed.

“And I’m going to continue that trend. Why don’t you go back to your dumb twat and leave me alone?” I roll my eyes and turn away.

Within seconds, Grant is right on top of me, shoving me into the wall. In all the time we dated, he never put his hands on me, so to say I’m afraid is an understatement. I refuse to let him see my fear, though — that just gives him a greater sense of power.

“When are you going to get it through your thick little head, Kelsey Bear? I’m not the guy you break up with. This isn’t over until I say it is.”

He leans forward in attempt to kiss me, but is very quickly met with the heel of my hand thrusting upward, hitting his nose. “Fuck!” he shouts in pain.

His hands cup over his nose, and I can see the blood dripping between them. He’s still too close for comfort, so I bring my foot up to his stomach and shove him away. I can’t move fast enough back toward my table. Joey is on his feet within seconds, pulling me into his chest.
