“Young man, I sincerely hope you can help me!” she cries dramatically. The poor woman is shaking with worry.

“What seems to be the problem, ma’am?” I try to keep a soothing voice to calm her down.

“Pardon my language, please. My dumbass granddaughter borrowed my car this afternoon, and I asked her to get gas while she was out. She came home and told me she filled my tank with green gas because it’s better for the environment.”

I have to put my hand over my mouth to restrain myself from laughing. I’ve seen people posting all over TikTok about this shit, and unfortunately, this isn’t the first time I’ve had someone come in with an issue.

“Not a problem, ma’am. I can drain the gas tank and fill it with regular unleaded gas. Give me about twenty minutes.”

“Oh, thank you! Thank you so very much!” She takes my hand and pats it in that loving grandmotherly way. “You’re a real angel, you know that?”

“Oh, I don’t know about that — but thank you.” I usher the woman to have a seat in the waiting area and nudge my head toward Frankie to come help me in the garage.

Once the door is closed, Frankie busts into hysterical laughter. “Dude, I almost pissed my pants after she called me for the tow. Green gas?! What the actual fuck is wrong with this younger generation?”

I lightly backhand him against his chest, as if to keep him in check. “Hey, we did dumb shit at that age too. We’re just fortunate that social media wasn’t big enough back then to document it all.” I can only imagine the reactions my parents would have if they knew even half of the things I got up to at that age.

“Thank God for that,” he mutters. “You good here, or do you need my help?”

“I’m good, it won’t take me long to flush and refill the tank. Thanks for bringing her in, man.” As promised, I have the car ready in less than twenty minutes. I’ve done this for so many people that, at this point, I can do it in my sleep.

“Oh, bless your heart. How much do I owe you?” she asks when I hand her the keys.

“No charge, ma’am. Just make sure your granddaughter understands that putting diesel in a gasoline vehicle can cause serious damage to the engine.”

“Thank you, young man. I appreciate your kindness.” She takes a twenty-dollar bill out of her wallet and places it on the counter. I know better than to argue with her, so I tip my hat in thanks before she heads out of the office. Glancing at my watch, I realize I’m running late for practice. I grab my phone and text Kelsey.

Me: I hate to ask another favor

Kelsey: What now?

Me: Can you stop by the field on your way out and let Mitch know I’m running a little late and to start without me?

Kelsey: Sigh…I guess…

Me: You’re the best :)

Kelsey: I know :P

She doesn’t know how much I actually mean that. Or maybe she does, but she doesn’t feel the same way.

Chapter 3

“Grant? Are you home?” I call as I walk in the door. My voice echoes off the walls. The TV is off, and there’s no music playing anywhere in the apartment — usually pretty good indicators that he’s not here.

Me: Any idea what time you’ll be home tonight?

Grant: No clue, we got hammered with a huge case this morning.

Me: Should I plan for you being home for dinner?

Grant: Kelsey, I JUST said I have no idea when I’ll be home. I can’t make a commitment for dinner.

Me: Whatever

Me: Grab something for yourself on your way home. I’m gonna go hang out with Savannah

Grant: You don’t have to be such a bitch you know
