Apprehension completely takes over his face before he continues. “But I don’t want you to find another apartment. What do you think about moving in permanently?”

“I thought you’d never ask — I’d love to.”

Joey leans down and kisses me gently, and I reply with more fervor than he expected out of me. He pulls away slightly, leaving me wanting.

“Kelsey, don’t get yourself all riled up. The doctor said you’re supposed to be resting.”

“I hate to break it to you, Joey. Anytime I’m around you, I get riled up. My heart races, butterflies start rumbling through my stomach, and well, you already know what happens to my panties.” I smirk up at him seductively.

“So, you kinda like me, huh?” He grins back.

“Just a little bit,” I chuckle before I snuggle back into his chest. “I love you, Joey Brooks.”

“I love you too, Kelsey Andrews. Get some rest — I’ll be right here when you wake up.”

Joey’s grip around my body tightens, solidifying my sense of safety. I feel my breathing slow down as I drift off to sleep.

Chapter 35

I stayed up all night watching Kelsey sleep. I was too terrified of her slipping back into unconsciousness to go to sleep myself. By the time dawn rolls around, I’m fighting to keep my eyes open.

“How’s she doing?” Sav whispers from the doorway.

I glance down at the sleeping beauty on my chest. “She’s been out cold all night. I hate to wake her, but she needs to take her meds.”

Savannah offers a sympathetic smile. “Stay with her, I’ll make her something for breakfast. She can’t take those meds on an empty stomach.”

“Thank you,” I whisper before she walks away. “Kelsey.” I kiss the top of her head. “I need you to wake up, Angel.”

Kelsey groans lightly as she stirs about, throwing the covers over her head. “No… Too comfortable.”

I can’t help but let out a small chuckle. “Come on, time to get up. Your sister is making you breakfast so you can take your medicine.”

Her eyes vigorously pop open. “Savannah’s making breakfast?!” she asks excitedly.

“Yeah… Is that a problem?” I ask skeptically.

She swiftly throws the covers off of her and practically hops out of bed. “That means french toast with strawberries and whipped cream!”

“Whoa, Kels. Slow down. You shouldn’t be running and jumping around.”

“Relax — I’m fine. I’m not going to go running into the kitchen. I’m just excited about my sister making breakfast.”

I saunter around the bed and pull her into my arms. “You know, I was planning on bringing you breakfast in bed.”

“Mmm, tempting, but I need to get up and move around. Come on.” She pulls on my arm, but I don’t budge.

My eyes narrow as I stare her down. “Do you know what ‘bed rest’ means, Angel?”

“Yes, it means stay off of my feet. It’s not going to kill me to walk the hundred feet from the bedroom to the kitchen and sit at the table. You’re out of your damn mind if you think I’m staying in bed all day. Shit, that reminds me — I need to text the school and let them know I won’t be in.”

I put up a hand to stop her. “Already taken care of. Principal Morris said she hopes you feel better soon and to let her know if you need anything.”

Kelsey’s smile in this moment melts my heart. She’s not used to having someone take care of her this way, and I’m more than happy to show her how she’s deserved to be treated all along.

“Breakfast is ready!” Savannah calls from the kitchen.

“Come on, handsome.” She pulls my hand again, but this time I allow her to lead the way.
