“Okay, well, I’m going to have a look around and see if maybe there was any forensic evidence left behind.” He pulls out his wallet and grabs a business card. “If you come across anything that might be useful to us, give me a call.”

I glance down at the card — Oliver Cantwell. I make a mental note to have Max run that name through his private investigator. I need to know which side of the law this man is on before I disclose any information to him.

As Officer Cantwell walks away, my phone rings, showing Max’s name on my caller ID.

“Were your ears ringing or something?” I chuckle morbidly as I answer the phone.

His tone indicates that he’s not in a joking mood when he speaks. “Can you prove it was him, Joey?”

“For Kelsey’s car, possibly, if he left fingerprints on the note. For the damage he did to my shop and the car that was sitting in the garage overnight, no.”

Max’s voice is high pitched as he speaks quickly. “What are you talking about? What did he do to your shop?”

My palm covers over my eyes as if the motion will prevent the migraine that’s building. “I can’t even talk about it right now, Max. It’s a fucking nightmare. I’ll send you the security camera footage when we hang up.”

“Jesus, man. You’ve got quite a situation on your hands here. And to answer the question in your email — yes, I have the order drawn up. Come by and get it as soon as you can and get it down to town hall to serve it to him.”

“I’ll be there as soon as the police leave. Thanks, Max.”

“You got it, man.”

I have no idea how the hell I’m going to explain this to Kelsey — she’s going to flip the fuck out.

Chapter 43

I know I shouldn’t poke the bear by initiating contact again, but I really don’t know how else to handle this. Plus, if I can get him to admit something via text, I’d have something to show the police, and have him arrested for vandalism.

Me: Seriously Grant?! Keying my car? Slashing my tires? WTF is wrong with you?

Grant: I have no idea what you’re talking about…

Me: Don’t fuck with me Grant. I expect you to pay for all of the damage you caused to my car.

Grant: I’m not paying for something I didn’t do

I should’ve known he would never admit to something through text — he is a lawyer, after all.

Me: Whatever you’re playing at, it needs to stop. I’ve told you repeatedly, it’s over. I’m with Joey and I’m happy. Why would you want me back when I would just be miserable with you?

Grant: Maybe I’ve changed…

Me: Yeah? Maybe I grew a dick and balls overnight…

Grant: Ouch lol

Me: I’m glad this is so funny to you. I’m serious Grant. Leave me alone or we’ll file a restraining order against you

I don’t get a response back from him, so maybe he gets the picture now. Ha! In the words of the great Alicia Silverstone — As if…

By the time I reach my lunch hour, I find that my nerves are still so tightly wound up that I have no appetite. I feel like my time could be better spent doing something productive, but I can’t think of where to start.

“Knock, knock,” I hear the voice that makes my heart flutter. But when my eyes drift to the doorway, my heart stops — Joey looks absolutely destroyed.

“Joey… what’s wrong?” I stand up from my desk and walk toward him. He closes the distance between us and pulls me into his arms.

“I needed to see you. I needed to know there was still light in my world.” I can feel his body trembling as he squeezes me tight.

“What happened, babe?”
