“Sounds like a plan. My sheepskin jacket isn’t here and really was my warmest coat.”

“Not to worry,” said Shaw. “We’ll be able to outfit you.”

“Sounds good,” said Cullen. “Shaw, get the men together and get what Salem will need.” He turned to her, “Did you bring your weapons?”

“My weapon is in the gun safe in the cabin, and again if someone is trying to figure out if I’m there, probably best to leave it. Most of the others are under my bed, except my favorite stake. It’s in my purse.”

“Shaw, bring a selection of handguns…”

“If you have it, my choice of weapons is a SIG Sauer P229R.”

“That’s a serious weapon,” said Shaw.

“I’m a serious shooter,” replied Salem.

Chuckling, Shaw left them.

“One time…” started Cullen.

“You were right the first time. I won’t be left behind. This is my case. If I’m going to have to fight you every time things get dicey, this isn’t going to work. I’ll just take my sphere and go back to Kenai.”

“You are unwilling to compromise.”

“That’s not true, Cullen. I’ve breached a bunch of security protocols and thrown in with you. I’ve agreed to having your men and a fully armed stealth helicopter fly us in when really, I should be doing all of this alone.”

“You stay behind me. I lead; you follow.”

“Is that a little like, ‘me Tarzan; you Jane?”

“It’s a lot like that,” he growled under his breath.

“You do realize in those stories, Jane’s the one that actually figures things out, don’t you?”

“As long as I get to save the day and you’re safe, I don’t care which one of us is the smartest.”

She was silent for a moment. “Why?”

“Why what?” This was definitely not a discussion he wanted to have at the moment.

“Why did you save me the first time? Why send a detail to watch over me? Why tell me about you and your pack? So many whys that I need to know.”

He leaned down and rubbed her cheek with his thumb. “And I will answer all of those questions, just not right now.”

“But you will answer them?”

“Yes.”

She nodded. “Okay. Let’s go triumph over evil. When we get back, provided we’re both still alive and no one’s badly injured, can we go for that horseback ride?”

“We can. If we’re too tired, we’ll have my people hook up a buggy and we’ll take that out.”

“That sounds lovely. Do you have horse drawn sleighs as well?”

“With jingle bells on their harnesses.”

“Then let’s go get the bad guys.”

They walked to the side of the house where there was a large expanse of lawn, which opened so that a helicopter could be raised from its hiding place.
