“Thanks,” Bex said.

Aiden’s co-worker nodded and headed to the kitchen.

Aiden stood. “And there’s your answer. Single as can be. I should get back to work.” He gestured to her food. “If you need anything, let me know. I’ll plan to pick you up tonight around 8:00.”

Bex gave him a soft smile. “Okay.”

He returned the smile, then walked to the bar to check on the older gentleman.

Bex ate and pondered this fresh development. She had many questions, but two sat in the forefront of her mind. 1) Why was Aiden working here, as a bartender not a chef? and 2) How the hell was she going to be friends with him when her body reacted so strongly to him?

Chapter 7

Bex

“Those ladies will talk about you for the rest of their lives,” Bex laughed as Aiden’s Nissan backed out of the driveway.

“Good, I’ll live forever in their love.” He grinned.

Like he’d said, Aiden ran home to shower and change, then rolled up to Bex’s parents’ that night. Her dad checked his tires and had cream soda over ice with him. He didn’t say it, but he’d missed having Aiden around. Actions spoke louder than words.

Aiden flirted with all the ladies in the rummy club. By the time he’d left, the ladies all had cartoon hearts in their eyes for him.

“What do you have planned for us tonight?” Bex asked.

He glanced at her quickly, and his eyes twinkled. “You’re in luck. The fair is only one county over right now.”

He shifted the car into drive and pulled forward on the road.

Bex’s heart jumped at those words. She loved the fair! But she couldn’t go... there were too many young people there — too many of Lovely Oblivion’s fans.

“I’ll get recognized,” she said.

“You won’t. I brought a disguise for you.”

He opened the cubby between the seats, reached inside, and produced a well-worn ball cap.

Bex laughed, took the hat from him, and pulled it onto her head. “My bandmate, Jade, would call this a ‘rockstar disguise.’”

“Fitting.” He grinned and shut the cubby. “It’ll work. I have a hoodie on the backseat to go with it.”

“I think you underestimate my fans.”

He quirked an eyebrow and glanced at her. “I think you underestimate my disguise.”

“Fine. When we get mobbed, it’s up to you to defend us.”

“You know I will. But we won’t get mobbed. Don’t be paranoid.”

“Fine. If you say so.”

“I say so.” Aiden smiled at her.

She shook her head.

They kept the conversation light and trivial the rest of the drive to the fair, discussing favorite bands, movies, and books. Bex almost felt like a teen on their first date again, despite knowing they weren’t really on a date.

Aiden smelled delicious from his shower, and his tight black t-shirt accentuated his muscles. Being in the enclosed car with him, Bex had a tough time concentrating on anything but him. She tried to focus on the excitement of the fair.
