After a second of hesitation, he nodded, fully committing. “If you’re in, I’m in.”

“I’m in. Let’s start over where we left off. Treat this like we never broke up. We’ll deal with what happens together, okay?”

“Okay.”

“I mean it. Don’t shut me out.”

He nodded. “Okay. In the interests of fair disclosure, the ring you asked me about was a promise. To myself, really. A reminder... that I shouldn’t get involved with anyone. Taking it off, being here with you... It’s a huge step for me.”

“I want you to get involved with me.”

Right then, an alarm went off in the kitchen, breaking the moment. Aiden squeezed her hand and pulled his away.

“Food’s ready. Let’s start the night fresh when I get back, okay? I want tonight to be about us. Only us.”

“Okay.”

Aiden half-smiled at her, pushed back his chair, and dashed toward the kitchen.

Bex took another drink of her wine. He’d pushed her away and gone through all that alone. She felt guilty that she’d let him do that.

She tried to set aside the guilt and focus on the night with him.

He returned holding two plates of chicken alfredo, which he placed on the table in front of them.

She pointed at the food and smiled. “This is my favorite.”

“I know.” He smiled back. “Dig in.”

Her heart warmed. He’d remembered and gone out of his way to make her favorite.

She picked up her fork and took a bite of the creamy pasta. The creamy flavor hit her tongue immediately and she moaned.

“This is the best alfredo.” She pointed her fork at her plate as she chewed. “You seriously need to open your own restaurant. Mmm.”

Aiden shifted on his chair, her noises obviously taking his mind elsewhere.

He cleared his throat. “Thank you. I’ll cook for you every day if it gets reactions like that.”

He speared some pasta on his fork and held it out to her.

Her eyes locked with his as her lips closed around his fork and slowly slid down the tines. When she slid off the end, she closed her mouth and chewed, a small “mmmm” escaping.

He swallowed hard, his adam’s-apple bobbing as his blue gaze devoured her.

She wanted this man. Wanted him in her life. Wanted him in her heart. Wanted him physically inside her.

“I’ve got an idea,” she said.

“What’s that?”

She stood and rounded the table. She straddled his lap, shifting against his hardness and her dress’s skirt falling over them.

“We’re not letting this delicious food go to waste. But I was way too far away from you.”

A smile touched his mouth. “Agreed. Much too far away.”

He ran his hands up her outer thighs.
