Desperately.

She wanted to take him in her mouth again and finish what they had started. She wanted to feel his warm hands on her naked flesh, pleasuring her in ways she’d never felt before.

She wanted that battle between them once more, where they each tried to get the other to break.

She wanted him to break her. Ever so slowly. Ever so fully.

Her mouth went dry as these thoughts consumed her, but when Apollo cleared his throat, she straightened, forcing her mind to clear.

Whatever Apollo had planned, she needed to be prepared.

The death magic from her necklace had failed. She needed an alternative plan. Now.

Think, think, think…

“I have no doubt you already know what I wish to speak to you about,” Apollo said, approaching the fireplace, where flames crackled merrily. He braced his hands on the mantle and stared into the fire as if it could provide him all the answers he needed.

“I have a guess, Your Majesty,” Pandora hedged.

Apollo turned to look at her with a knowing smirk that reminded her so much of Sol that her chest began to ache anew.

Don’t think about Sol. Focus on your plan.

The wards were too strong. The only way to proceed would be to have them removed completely. But she wasn’t powerful enough to do that.

Only Apollo was.

How could she convince him to take down the wards when he was already paranoid from the attack on them?

“There was a breach on the wards earlier,” Apollo went on, pacing in front of the fireplace. “Suspiciously, right after you and Sol worked to strengthen them. Can you explain that?”

“Begging your pardon, Your Majesty, but I don’t think it’s suspicious at all,” Pandora said carefully, a plan beginning to form in her mind.

“Excuse me?”

“This is exactly why I came here—to warn you. Pandora’s magic has already destroyed the Underworld. It will look for something else to devour next, and there is a whole arsenal of power here, far more than we had in the Underworld.”

A satisfied glint shone in Apollo’s eyes. Yes, that’s right. Let me flatter you, Pandora thought savagely.

“That power will draw the dark magic,” Pandora went on. “And quickly. The magic will be hungry after having been trapped for so long. I’m surprised it’s taken this long for it to come after Elysium.”

“So, you’re saying it was no coincidence, then? That the darkness attacked right after you inspected the wards?”

“That’s exactly what I’m saying. In fact, I believe the dark magic is drawn here because of the wards.”

Apollo frowned, stroking his beard. “What do you mean?”

Pandora’s heart raced. She would be taking an enormous risk with this next step. Either Apollo would agree, and her plan could continue… or he would only suspect her more.

If this backfired, he would cast her out. Or worse, kill her.

But she had no other choice. It has to be done, she reminded herself.

Swallowing hard, she summoned all her resolve and took a deep breath before continuing, “Your wards are strong. Even my death magic could not get through, so I commend you on crafting such a powerful defensive magic.”

Another smirk tugged at the corners of his lips. Oh yes, he certainly loved the flattery.

“I’m assuming it took quite a bit of power from you to create them?” Pandora asked.
