Typhon’s rage and power coursed through him, rising and surging like a tidal wave. It knocked Evander over until he fell on his rear, his head rocking backward and slamming into the concrete. Stars burst in his vision, and he trembled from the intensity racing through his body.

No, no, no…

Claws raked through him, slashing at flesh and bone as the darkness claimed him, clutching him so tightly he couldn’t breathe.

The darkness was Typhon. And Mona’s scream had ignited some feral side of the demon that Evander could not reach. They had bonded in the Underworld, but this place, this realm, had altered Typhon.

He was now something unrecognizable.

And this time, Evander was too weak to fight it. Typhon was stronger, and that power kept rising and rising with a primal need to protect Mona, to find her. He was no match for Typhon now. Even with Mona’s melody still lingering within him, he couldn’t hold on any longer. He had no strength left.

He surrendered fully to the demon inside him.

PANDORA

Every nerve in Pandora’s body went still at the sound of Sol’s admission.

Pandora was my lover.

But it couldn’t be true. Surely, this was Sol trying to mock her or play one of his games with her.

But the torment in his gaze was so potent, so raw and wounded, that she knew he was telling the truth.

“I don’t understand,” she said, her voice weak. And it was the truth. She didn’t understand any of this.

Is this true? she asked the voice inside her. But the soul of the goddess within her made no response. Even the echoing screams from the past had been silenced.

There was nothing but emptiness. And she wasn’t sure what that meant.

Had the goddess felt nothing for Sol? Or did she not remember him?

Sol shrugged as if brushing off the notion that he had been the lover of a woman who had quite literally been ripped apart by Apollo and Aidoneus, whose darkness now roamed the realms in search of something to devour.

Whose darkness was now a part of Pandora.

“I was young and naive,” Sol said, gazing over the balcony toward the setting sun. “And she was beautiful and alluring. I couldn’t resist her. For a year, we were inseparable, our very souls connected to one another. And then…” He trailed off, his eyes dimming and his jaw going rigid. “And then, she made a choice that separated us forever.”

“That’s not true,” Pandora seethed.

Sol blinked and looked at her in confusion. “What are you talking about?”

Pandora clamped her mouth shut, but she couldn’t take the words back. Sol was staring at her in shock and wariness, and she needed a distraction now before he asked too many questions.

“Why did you think I was her?” Pandora asked. “In the library.”

His expression smoothed into that familiar look of apathy and boredom. He shrugged again, returning his gaze to the horizon.

“Answer the damn question, Sol,” Pandora said with a sigh, tired of having to pull the truth out of him.

He rolled his eyes and braced his arms along the balcony railing. “I’ve had plenty of lovers over the years.”

Pandora made a retching sound, and Sol laughed.

“What I mean to say is, I’ve tried to forget her,” Sol said, the ghost of a smile still on his face. “But I’ve been careful not to get too wrapped up in someone. Not like I was with her.”

“Ah. You’ve kept your distance.”
