I hesitate before typing my fear.

Brahms: Meet them, get acquainted . . . be a father.

Sephie: I think today is as great as any other day.

My fingers hover over the keys. I take a deep breath and admit my biggest worry.

Brahms: What if they don’t like me?

Sephie: What if they learn to love you, and you realize they’re amazing and love them just as much?

Brahms: You’re making it sound simple.

Sephie: They’re pretty simple children—they only ask for love and attention.

Her words hit home, making me see things clearly. Of course, I’ll learn to love them with everything I have. They’re part of Seraphina, and she’s my entire heart, but that doesn’t guarantee that they’ll reciprocate, does it?

My therapist told me yesterday to believe in myself. I just have to focus on being the father they deserve, however long it takes to earn their affection. We can find a middle ground, a thing in common. Music could be it. What else?

Brahms: I noticed Ary has Mom’s eyes. But her personality reminded me of you—sassy, defiant, yet kind. Any tips to convince her that I’m worth giving a chance?

Sephie: She does and she loves knowing that she has something from your mom or dad. I’m sure you’ll be able to figure out how to get along with her.

Brahms: I can tell them about Zane and my parents. What about Iris or your mom? Do you talk to them about your family?

Sephie: I do. I loved Mom, even when at the end things were . . . I don’t understand what happened between us.

I debate my next words carefully.

Brahms: Did you read the letter?

Sephie: I might do it. I mean, things weren’t as I assumed, so maybe there’s some kind of explanation, apology, or a map to a hidden treasure where she explains to me what happened to the St. Clairmont fortune.

I wonder why she needs to know. Does she need money, or is it just curiosity? I can’t impose anything right now, but later I’ll make sure she has access to all my accounts. I want to make sure my kids have everything.

Brahms: My brothers might be able to figure that out, but let’s not forget that year your parents spent traveling around the world trying to find a cure for your father. That must have been expensive.

Sephie: Hey, the kids want to know your ETA and if you’re staying for dinner.

I check the time. It’s only ten forty-six in the morning. Will they want me around in another six to seven hours?

Brahms: Am I invited to dinner?

Sephie: Of course, they have plans for you. ( emoji) Though, it’s too early. I haven’t even decided on lunch yet.

Plans? That doesn’t sound cryptic but also relaxes me knowing they’ll want me there through dinner.

Brahms: We could make pizza if you have all the ingredients.

Sephie: I probably do. Lucius has everything and more in stock. Thank you for letting him continue to work for us. Ary’s appetite has increased. She’s still picky, but he gets her.

Brahms: It’s nothing. I’m sure he’s enjoying working for you more than he does for Ellie.

I take a steadying breath as the driver nears her street.

Brahms: I’m just a minute away from there. Wish me luck.

Sephie: You’ll be fine. I’ll be right next to you if you need me.
