At his words, I breathed out, tentatively lifting my arms to loosely wrap around his back. My hands were shaking.

“That’s it.” His fingers massaged the back of my neck, and I relaxed even further, breathing out against him, my arms pulling him closer to me without any conscious thought.

When was the last time someone had hugged me like this? For no reason other than to provide comfort? I couldn’t even remember. And yet here was this boy with the sunshine smiles, giving me what I didn’t even know I needed.

There was a lump in my throat that wouldn’t go away.

When he released me, he directed me to sit down. “We’re going to talk about what you bringing me coffee means, but not yet. Right now, you’re going to sit down while I—” His gaze caught on something on my desk, his brows pulling together and his mouth turning down. “Have you eaten today?”

I followed his gaze to my uneaten sandwich. “I worked through lunch, and I must’ve forgotten.”

He leaned over, prodding at the sandwich with distaste, shaking his head. “The bread’s gone hard now. You can’t eat this. It’s probably been sitting here for hours, hasn’t it?”

I didn’t reply, but I didn’t need to. With an angry huff of breath, JJ wrapped the sandwich back up, throwing it into the wastepaper basket. Then, he headed over to the door, crouching down, and I heard the distinctive sound of a zipper opening, followed by a rustling noise. When he appeared again, he placed two items down in front of me. “This is all I have in my bag, but it’s better than a stale sandwich. Protein bar and an apple. Eat them.”

I almost smiled at his bossy tone as I reached for the protein bar, tearing into the wrapper. He was the one to smile then, and he returned to me, hopping up onto the edge of my desk next to my chair. Had it been anyone else, I wouldn’t have allowed it, but I seemed to break my rules for him all too easily.

“I know we don’t know each other, but if there’s anything you want to get off your chest, I’m a good listener.”

It was easier to focus on the protein bar, to shake my head as I filled my mouth so I didn’t have to respond to his comment. JJ didn’t speak again, and when I risked a glance up at him, he was staring down at his hands.

“It’s been a long day,” I said.

JJ nodded. “Any reason?”

Finishing up the last of the protein bar, I reached for the apple. “I’m tired, and I worked through lunch instead of taking a break.”

“Okay. There’s probably no point in me telling you that you need to take regular breaks and get some sleep, is there?” He shot me a wry smile as I took a bite of the crisp, juicy fruit.

Shaking my head, I climbed to my feet and carefully placed the apple down on the desk. I pushed my chair back and then came to stand in front of him.

His eyes widened when I lifted my hand, placing my knuckles beneath the smooth skin of his chin, and tilted his head up. “Killian.”

“Thank you,” I said simply, lowering my head and brushing my mouth over his soft lips.

The kiss was fleeting, and it was ill-advised, yet it wasn’t enough. When I lifted my head again, I lowered my hand, taking a purposeful step back to create some distance between us.

“No.” JJ glared at me.

“No?” My heart felt as if it had been jump-started from our one brief kiss, new energy thrumming through my body. “No, what?”

“No,” he said again. “You don’t bring me fucking coffee, get me worried about you, and then tease me with that excuse for a kiss.”

“What would you prefer I did, Joshua? Don’t bring you coffee? Refuse to allow you into my office? Stay away from your tempting fucking mouth?” I found myself leaning closer again, my hands planted on the desk on either side of him. Our faces were mere inches apart.

“No,” he bit out. “I want you to stop teasing me and take what we both want.”

“What we shouldn’t want.”

“I’m finding it hard to care about what we should and shouldn’t want when all the blood from my brain is currently in my dick.”

There was a moment when we paused, breathing hard, our gazes locked on one another, and then the spark between us ignited, setting us alight.

We lunged for each other. My mouth came down on his, hard, one of my hands going to his hip to yank him into me. He widened his legs, right on the edge of my desk, and I pressed forwards, my erection sliding against his. Moaning against my lips, he wrapped his legs around me, his hands clutching at my shoulders to hold him in place as he opened his mouth for me.

“What are you doing to me?” he panted, arching his body, his hips thrusting forwards, desperate for friction.

“What are you doing to me?” I had no explanation for what was happening between us. Sweeping my arms beneath his thighs, I lifted him, staggering over to the door. Pressing him up against the solid surface, I fumbled for the lock, clicking it into place before I attacked his mouth with a vengeance. I poured every ounce of stress, frustration, and anger into my kiss, and he returned it with enthusiasm, writhing against me, hot and hard and so fucking beautiful in my arms.
