I tugged my lip between my teeth, replaying our recent interactions. I hoped he didn’t, at least. Maybe I should ease up on the flirting, especially since this was the first time he’d texted me.
ME:
So tell me why you’re sending me pics of your boring coffee and being incredibly insulting about my superior taste in coffee
KILLIAN:
I thought you should see what a proper coffee looks like
ME:
That’s not coffee. That’s tedium in a cup
“Josh?”
I lifted my head to find my grandma watching me, amusement in her gaze.
“Sorry. Sorry. Just…texting.”
“Who’s putting that smile on my boy’s face? A new lover, perhaps?”
“G! I don’t have lovers. That sounds so…old.”
“Well, who is it? You wouldn’t want to deprive your dear grandmother of the news, not when I’m on my deathbed.” Her hand went to her forehead, and she pretended to swoon. I rolled my eyes.
“Deathbed, honestly. It’s…he’s a…” I paused. A friend didn’t sound right because we barely knew each other. I definitely didn’t want to tell her he was a lecturer at my university, and I absolutely was not going to tell her I’d— “He’s a doctor,” I finished. When her eyes widened, I shook my head. “Not a medical doctor. A doctor of something else. Don’t ask me what because I’m not actually sure.”
“Hmm. I think I’d like to meet this doctor.” With a speed that belied her age, she snatched the phone from my hand, her gaze scanning my message thread with Killian.
“Give that back!”
“Just you wait a minute. Young people are so impatient,” she tutted. My phone buzzed in her hand, and I groaned under my breath. Her brows furrowed as she jabbed at the screen, but her gaze cleared as she returned the phone to me, a smile tugging at her lips.
