His eyes widened dramatically. Ander, he mouthed, and I almost smirked. Almost.

“Does this mean I can call you Killian?”

My eyes narrowed. “Don’t push your luck. Go and sit back down. I’ll talk to JJ.”

“Yes, sir.” Giving me his usual salute, this time accompanied by a relieved smile, he backed away from me and returned to his seat.

The last thing I wanted was to hurt JJ. It was time I paid him a visit so we could speak in person.

“Good job!” I pulled Alyssa and Leo into a hug. “I can safely say we’re ready for our performance ahead of the showcase.”

Throwing myself into preparing for the dance showcase was exactly what I needed when I was so unsure about everything that was happening with Killian. And speaking of the showcase…

“Before I forget—did you see the email with the showcase date and time?”

Leo bit down on his lip, his cheeks flushing. “I saw it in my inbox, but I was too scared to read it. D-do we have to perform for an audience?”

I rubbed his back soothingly. “You can do this, babe. Me and Alyssa will be with you for the group performance, and when you do your solo, we’ll be right there in the wings to support you. If you want, we could round up a few friends for a rehearsal. What do you think? If you’ve already performed for an audience once, it won’t be so daunting when you do it again.”

He nodded slowly. “Um…yes. Okay. Thank you. C-can we make it a small audience, though?”

“Leave it with me. When do you want to do it? Today? It might be better to get it out of the way.”

His eyes widened, a panicked expression crossing his face, before he sighed. “Okay. Let’s do it. If you think it’ll help.”

“Aly? Want to do it?”

She waved her phone at us. “Already on it. The performance studio’s free at 6:00 p.m., so I’m booking it now. I’ll text Erin and Amy, see if they can come and watch. They might need some bribery to come out, though.”

“I’ll invite Ander, see if he can round up some of the football team. That should give them enough incentive.” Glancing at my phone, I thought for a minute. “Okay. We have three hours. Want to take a break, have a snack and a drink, and we can reconvene in half an hour?”

All in agreement, I headed over to my bag to get my own phone. Time to see who I could round up for our performance.

As soon as I unlocked my screen, I noticed the unread message from Killian, and my heart skipped a beat.

KILLIAN:

Are you available later? I have a number of things to finish up in my office, but I’ll be free from 7

Yes. Yes, I wanted to see him. Badly. We hadn’t seen each other since Gage had walked in on us, and I needed to see his face, to know everything was okay. Not just to hear it over a text, but to look into his eyes and know he was telling me the truth.

And I missed him.

ME:

OK. I’ll be in the Shaw performance studio. Meet outside at 7?

KILLIAN:

You’re studying late?

ME:
