They had come for him, but all he had to do was wait just a little longer, and it would not matter.

When the voices rose to shouts of anger, he was intrigued. But when he heard Modred holler in agony—he was unable to resist his curiosity. If the Prince in Iron was suffering, Grinn had to see it for himself.

He’d earned that much.

Gwen was out of breath by the time Mordred stopped his march through the woods. He had long legs, and she had to jog just to keep up with him. Sitting on a rock by the entrance to the cave was Doc. Eod barked happily and ran up to Mordred, tail wagging.

“You—” She stormed up to Doc. “How dare you!”

“What?” The wizard threw up his hands in a show of helplessness. “What’d I do?”

“You abandoned me! You left me all alone in the middle of nowhere—” Gwen fought the urge to smack him.

“I didn’t do anything of the sort. You had Eod. And he took you to the village where you made new friends.” Doc planted his hands on his hips. “You figured things out just fine on your own.”

“But—you—” she growled, shutting her eyes and counting back from three to keep from screaming at the wizard. “You could have helped me. Explained to me what was happening. Or showed me how to use magic.”

“That would have been meddling.”

“But—”

“Enough squabbling. What’s done is done.” The Prince in Iron patted Eod on the head idly as he gazed at the entrance to the cave. His expression was dour. “I can sense it. It will not be long.”

“Mmh, stinks like hell.” Doc wrinkled his nose. “I expect you’re right.”

Mordred’s jaw twitched. “Fantastic.”

Gwen wished she had a plan—wished she had something, anything at all to say. But instead, all she could do was wring the sleeve of her dress in her hands. She couldn’t stop Grinn from blowing up the volcano. She couldn’t stop Mordred from trying to kill Grinn.

Despite the fact she was now a so-called witch, she felt helpless.

There was swirl of magic from the side of the clearing. Mordred placed his hand on the hilt of his sword at his side. A moment later, out stepped two figures she was both happy and nervous to see.

Galahad and Zoe.

The Knight in Gold stared at Gwen, his mouth agape.

Zoe chuckled. “You just are full of surprises, are you not?” She spread her wings, and flitted over to her, gliding through the air before landing in front of her. “Were these but happier times.” She placed her palm on Gwen’s cheek.

“Yeah. It’s—it’s good to see you both.” She glanced over at Galahad. “And that you’re back together.”

“For as long as it lasts.” Galahad sighed. “But I am grateful for it, regardless.” He bowed his head to Mordred in thanks.

But the Prince in Iron hardly looked relieved. “Why have you come, Zoe?”

Right. That whole stupid game. Someone was probably watching—if not a lot of people. Gwen cringed and took a step back, folding her wings around her shoulders. Doc called her over with a jerk of his head, and she decided standing next to the other wizard was a good plan. Eod jogged over, licking her hand in greeting. Let the adults deal with their nonsense.

“I come with a plea, Mordred, Prince of Iron. Stand down from this war with the demon and submit yourself for judgment for your crimes.” Zoe stayed hovering in the air, her wings lazily moving at her back. “And if you do not do so willingly, I will force the matter.”

“The demon intends to destroy this world.”

“And we will deal with him in time.”

“Time? Time?” Mordred laughed cruelly. “That is one thing we do not have, Gossamer Lady.”

“We shall see. Stand down, prince.”

“No.”
