“Wouldn’t put it past them to hide in plain sight.” Oberon’s hand finds mine, squeezing gently. “You think they’re recruiting like this now?”
“Mass appeal for mass control,” I murmur back, feeling the weight of the possibility. “But why so open? Why not slink around in the shadows like they used to?”
“Maybe they don’t need to hide anymore.” His tone darkens, a growl barely contained. “Maybe they’re strong enough to start their play.”
“Then we’ll need to be stronger,” I whisper. “I don’t think we have a choice.”
I don’t need to make it clear what I’m talking about—the choice is between leaving town or staying to fight.
We’re going to stay…and we both know that.
The train’s hum is a steady beat, a reminder that the city pulses, alive and relentless. I lean into Oberon, his arm a barricade against the world as it whizzes by. His heat seeps into me, a silent promise of what’s to come.
“Long day,” he says, voice low, almost lost in the din of the subway car.
“Too long.”
“You okay?”
“I’m…yeah, I think so,” I murmur. “That whole thing just reminded me of everything that happened to me—what could still be happening to my friends, what’s happening to omegas all up and down the west coast. I just…”
He squeezes my shoulder. “What? You can talk to me, Star.”
I sigh. “When is it going to stop? When are people going to treat us like human beings?”
Oberon’s gaze softens, his fingers tracing circles on my skin. “I wish I had an answer for you, Star. I wish I could tell you that things will change overnight, that the world will suddenly see our worth. But it’s not that simple, and we both know that’s fucked.”
We fall into a contemplative silence, the rhythmic sway of the train lulling us into a shared sense of solace. The stark reality of our existence weighs heavily on me, like an anchor sinking deeper into my chest with every passing moment.
And at the same time…I never stop feeling the heat of being with my alphas.

I’m sure Oberon can sense the shift in how I’m thinking as my thoughts flit away from our problems and toward the potential for pleasure. Our eyes meet, and something primal flickers between us. “Can’t wait to get you home,” he whispers, and I can hear the raw need in his voice.
“Why wait?” I breathe out, every nerve ending singing with anticipation.
The train car is almost empty; no one can see us. I keep my eyes firmly ahead as I reach down to pull my panties aside, Oberon’s fingers instantly finding my wet slit.
