She nods with excitement. “Of course. That’ll be $5.74.”

I hand the woman my card, and she inserts it into the chip reader. After a few moments, it flashes green, and I slide the card back into my wallet. “Your order number is 331. Will you be dining in today?”

“Yes, I will.”

“Perfect. Pick any table number and let me know where you’re at.”

I scan over the options and decide on a booth next to the window. “Table eleven, please.”

“Perfect. Me or one of my colleagues will bring it over when it’s ready.”

“Thanks so much,” I say to her as I make my way over to the booth and have a seat.

I glance out the window and look onto the sidewalk, then the street. It’s so busy around this part of town too. The hustle and bustle of the city never cease to amaze me. Cars pass by, and people walk with purpose to their destinations.

I spot movement from my right and notice Emily’s waving her hand at me. She’s in a cute plaid business suit sort of thing, and her hair falls down straight on both sides of her head. She has a pair of glasses on too, which is new.

“When did you get glasses?” I question her.

She giggles as she slides into the seat across from me. “Since I’ve been sending a certain Umarova brother sexy photos. They add a nice touch, don’t you think?”

“You’d better be talking about Lom, or I might have to kill you.” I’m totally playing around with her, but if anyone thought it was okay to come across to Ruslan in that manner, I would kill them very slowly. It’s times like this that make me realize I’m in awe of Ruslan. He accepts me for everything that I am. He doesn’t see me as weak, inferior, poor, or even damaged. He just sees me as Amelia.

“Obviously, I’m talking about Lom. He’s a bit of a hottie.” Emily smiles from ear to ear, and I know she’s going to be in big trouble.

“What happened when we were in Grozny? Did the two of you get really close?” I inquire, and the woman behind the counter brings over my scone and my chai tea. She sits it down on the table and then walks off.

“I mean, as close as close can get, I guess. We flirted a lot. Had an intense make-out session, but it didn’t go past that.” Emily purses her lips out to the side like she wishes they did.

“What? Really?”

She furrows her brows and laughs. “Yeah, why? Did you and Ruslan make a bet or something?”

“No, but we should’ve. Shoot.” I laugh and pick up my chai latte. The mug is nice and warm, so I blow on the liquid. The last thing I want to do is burn my mouth right now.

“You two play too much.” Emily waves her hand in dismissal and laughs. “How’re things at their hotel suite right now? Did they fix the leak?”

“I’m not sure, to be honest. Ruslan didn’t say they’d have to stay at the apartment with us tonight, so I’m going to guess so.”

“Okay, well, the hotel must work pretty quickly. I bet since Ruslan’s rented it out for a hot minute that they’re working quickly to appease him.”

“Possibly. What did you end up getting? The entire menu looks delicious.”

“I got an iced mocha with three extra pumps of chocolate and a tuna salad sandwich.”

I instantly want to gag. Who mixes those two things?

“Fish and chocolate?” I make a barfing motion with my mouth.

“Hey! Don’t knock it until you try it.”

“I’d rather not, honestly.” God, the mere thought of those two things together is enough to physically make me nauseous.

My heart sinks into my stomach, and I realize I haven’t actively been looking for Danill. He has to be here because he’s always following me. I scan the coffee shop in an effort to find him, but Emily cuts in.

She grabs my hand and bites her lip. “Amelia, what’s going on with you? You look petrified.”

“Um, I just realized I don’t know where Danill is. I want to make sure he’s here.”
