“I’m sure. Thank you for all of your help, Sherry,” I assure her and walk out with Danill. We get in the SUV, and he pulls it around to the other side of the hotel where Carter’s room is. I wonder if he was using both the house and this motel room as drop-off points for drugs. The more my mind wanders, the more I think he could’ve used the money he stole from Amelia to fund his drug business. It would make sense from what Sherry told Danill and me, but I’ll only find out once we get Carter in our hands.

We walk up to the entrance, and Nal gets out of his SUV to meet us. I grab onto the motel door handle and use my body weight to pop the door free. Carter’s lying back on the yellow-colored bed and jumps up. “Who the fuck do you think you are?”

I shake my head and scoff at him. “Don’t you recognize my voice, Carter? I might get offended if you don’t.”

Carter immediately stills. “I left her alone. That’s what you said I had to do.”

I nod a couple of times. “Yeah, that was before I found out you’re the one who stole her identity or that you took advantage of her mother’s illness to get the information you needed. It takes a pretty fucked up person to use an addict’s vice for their own personal need. Now, I think I have most of the picture put together, but there are a couple of fuzzy parts here. Do you care to clear them up, or are we going to do this thing where you say you don’t know what I’m talking about?”

“Boss,” Danill speaks up and nods to the right side of the room. There are three trash bags semi-tied off, so I motion for Nal to go over and check them out. Sure enough, he walks over and opens the bags. Two of them are packed with bags of weed, and another one of them is a white powder. He did use the cash to start a business with cheap weed and shitty coke.

“Never mind. Looks like I have the answer I need. Nal, take that shit with us.” Nal picks up the bags at my command, and Danill pulls out his gun and goes over to Carter. Not surprisingly, Carter drops to the floor on his knees.

“Please don’t kill me. I’ll give back all of the money. I promise. I’ll fuckin’ do it, man. It’s not worth my life.”

Danill cackles in his face. “You should’ve thought about that before you stole from Miss Amelia.” Danill whips his gun back and slams it against Carter’s head. Carter’s body drops to the floor, and Danill makes sure he’s really out before he picks him up in his arms.

“Where are we headed, boss?” Nal asks.

“The factory the Steeles have. It’s remote enough to do what we need, and we can stash the shit there until we can get it tested. If it’s usable, I want to get it onto the streets and make some money back for Amelia,” I tell Nal, and he nods.

The group of us head out to our SUVs, and then we get on the road. It takes about forty minutes to get out to the factory from where the motel was, but I don’t much care about how long it takes. It could’ve taken us four hours, and I would’ve been patient as hell because Carter’s finally in my grasp.

We get to the factory, and Nal brings the bags inside. Danill’s carrying Carter, and I walk beside them. Nal takes the bags to one area while Danill drops Carter to the ground. He drops him in the area where my stepfather’s fresh blood is still drying. I can’t wait to see his face when he wakes up.

Danill and I sit down in the chairs and wait for Carter to stir awake. Meanwhile, I send Nal on a job to get some equipment to test the product. If it’s good, I’ll make money off it. If it isn’t, it’s money down the drain, and I’ll make Carter suffer even more. Who am I kidding? I’m going to make him suffer as much as I can either way. He screwed with the wrong woman. He caused her immeasurable pain and suffering. For that, there isn’t enough pain I can give him.

Another thirty minutes pass by before Carter begins coming to. He blinks a few times and runs his hand along the blood-stained cement. Once his eyes open, they widen, and he looks around like a scared child being cornered by bullies. He brings his hands up to his legs, and the red stains cause him to breathe in and out faster. “W-what is this?” he stutters.

“Come on, Carter. Surely you know what that is.”

It takes a few seconds, but it finally sinks in, and Carter swallows hard. “I didn’t follow her anymore. I left. I left to leave her alone.”

“That’s the thing. You didn’t leave to give Amelia space. You left because you feared what we’d do when we found it all out.”

“Idiot,” Danill adds, and Carter looks between the two of us.

“Who are you? I’ve never seen you in my life, and I was with Amelia for a long-ass time.”

“I’m your worst fucking nightmare, Carter.” I rise and go up to him. I grab him by the back of his scraggy hair and pull as hard as I can. “You screwed with the wrong woman. She has people who care about her. People who will make sure your death isn’t as quick as you’d hope.”

“No, man, come on. I did what you said! I left her alone.”

“After you already ruined her life, right? That’s the part you’re forgetting, you slimy piece of shit!” I roar into his face and throw him onto the ground. There’s a sledgehammer a few feet away, so I head over to it, lean down, and pick it up.

It’s a bit heavier than I thought it would be, so I swing it around a few times for good measure and then aim for Carter’s leg. I slam it down with as much strength as I have, and a crackling sound rings out around us. While Carter screams bloody murder, I’m smiling, as is Danill.

There’s nothing sweeter than seeing someone suffer who deserves it. “You’re doing this for my sloppy seconds?” Carter begins cackling like a madman in a desperate attempt to throw me off my game. “She’s used up, no good, disgusting even. You’re fucking her, right? You’ll grow bored of her one day soon. I sure did.”

I shake my head and don’t bother replying to him. He’s not worth it. I bring up the sledgehammer again and crash it down against his shoulder. It pops free from his socket, and he’s slowly looking like the hunchback of Notre Dame. I bring the hammer back again and do the same thing to the other side.

“She’s just a washed-up whore.” Carter begins cackling, and after a few seconds, I realize he can see my anger all across my face.

“Danill, Nal! Get over here.” Both of my men come up to me. “Hold him down.” They both do as I say, and they shove him to the ground, laying him flat on his back. I wanted to take a good bit of time doing this myself, but where I actually want to be is back with Amelia.

They’re holding him down at his shoulders, and I walk around his body, standing over his head. I line the sledgehammer up with his head, pull it as high as I can in the air, and then slam it down. With one hit, his skull cracks into many pieces. Brain matter oozes from his forehead, and his mouth is now a gaping hole.

Danill and Nal both let go of Carter, and I slam the sledgehammer down over and over again. Eventually, Danill comes up to me and pulls on my shoulder. He’s only seen me become a savage a few times, and this time I had good reason.
